en I think it's awesome. It's kind of bittersweet. You are excited that we have the most number of African-American students to succeed, but at the same time, that's just 32. You want more than that to succeed, not just at our school, but at every school.

en It is profoundly discouraging to learn that the share of African-American kids attending segregated schools has barely changed in the last decade since school choice policies were adopted in Michigan. We should all be concerned about the kind of society we are creating, in which more than half of African-American students in Michigan go to schools in which virtually none of their classmates are not also African-American.

en Our programs keep growing and growing, and the money has to keep growing with it. The whole name of the game is the adult students, the ones who didn't succeed in school. We give them a second chance at an education and 95 percent of them succeed, and that's what it's all about.

en This population of kids who are really in transition with their parents are at a very critical time as common sense would tell you. For them to have any chance to succeed in school, they must have this component and aspect of their education that continues out of school. The out of school time for them is critically important.

en The idea is to create an environment where all students feel connected at school, and the adults know the students they have. The priority is helping all students succeed.

en That's one of the reasons we've become a better team is going against them. It shows the students at this school want to see these girls succeed.

en This is right in line with everything we know and see, particularly in our low-income and urban school districts and some of our rural districts. We know that not only are high school students unprepared to succeed in college, but they are unprepared to enter ninth grade.

en How can you expect these kids to succeed in a home-based setting when some of them can't succeed in a school setting? We can't afford to experiment with our children's education.

en Unfortunately, school systems are more often concerned with how their retention numbers look instead of whether these children can read well enough to succeed. Consequently, schools have found loopholes in the law, and legislators need to plug those holes. Nothing does a child a greater disservice than promoting him when he is lacking the basic skills to succeed.

Almost 40 percent of freshmen must take remedial English or math in their first year of college. A high school diploma should mean that a student is prepared to succeed in college.

en But that's larger schools, not us. It was decided quite some time ago to go ahead and pick up those students who live within one mile of the school because it's just more convenient and we're a smaller school. Besides, the school bus is still the safest way to get to school.
