en He's a very loud coach, but I like that. He's strong and knows what he's talking about. He'll make us a very tough, competitive team.

en Their team is a little depleted this year. Traditionally, Wilde Lake has been a little tougher than that. They have some really tough kids on their team. Talking to their coach, who is also their AD, they've had some difficulties. While it's a good win, you kind of feel for a team like that because they've had some problems.

en Obviously, I'm a very happy coach tonight. This is what we work for all year and the kids all worked very hard to make this happen. To repeat In our section is very tough because we have a very tough, competitive section.

en We have a chance to be a little more competitive. We have to play the Super Bowl champ twice and Cincinnati, a playoff team, twice. And Baltimore is still tough. We're in a tough division, and, hopefully, with the guys we added, we can be competitive. We know it won't be easy.

en When you have distractions, and I'm an expert on that from this season, it's tough to get everybody thinking positive. It's tough to get 19- to 20-year-olds to concentrate on the task at hand when so many people outside the program -- whether students, media or people from your hometown -- are talking about, 'Is your head coach going to be there.' Now the focus is really on the team.

en Right now, I'm just talking with coach Thompson and a couple of other schools. I'm still working out with the team and just trying to make sure I have the right fit here.

en We had some ups and downs and some tough times in the middle of the year, but we stuck with it and bounced back. Coach [George] Braun is an excellent coach and he really had a lot to do with our success. He's like me—he's competitive and he likes to win.

en Just remember to show some compassion. When you talk about firing a coach, you're not talking about how it affects one man. You're talking about how it impacts 14 families — the family of every assistant coach. You're talking about 30, 40, 50 people and a lot of them are children.

en I just assumed you talk about your own team. You don't talk about our team. He has no business talking about our team. He's not our coach. We'll let our coach talk about our team. We'll let our players talk about our team. The only thing we ever do is give respect to the other teams because that's what they deserve.

en He is a guy who is only going to accept winning. I like his attitude and his style of coaching and he loves to coach. He's dedicated and determined. A coach can't make a bad team into a good team, but he can make a good team into a better team.

en Obviously you go through some growing pains, a learning curve so to speak. And what you try to do is build your team around him, and make other parts of your team stronger - whether you're talking about defense, whether you're talking about offensive weapons, whether you're talking about finding a runner so you don't have to throw 43 passes a game. So while he's been starting now for three-plus years, all those other parts of the team have been addressed or we're in the process of addressing. en The whole team bought into what coach Self wanted us to do. We want to get them out of what they are used to doing, make it tough to run their offense.

en He was a great competitor, great player for us, a three-year starter. I think it is an honor for me to have him coach. He also coached Legion here at Walpole High for four years. He's certainly a good baseball coach, it's just one loss today. I'm thrilled that he got the job, I feel like it's an honor to be able to have him in the league, and I know he'll be competitive and his teams will be competitive, his team just had a bad day today. He'll get them back, he's 3-4, they're right in the thick of things.

en I felt like this year's team would be great to coach, a fun team to coach. They would be a team that would play unselfishly, play together. I didn't know how it would translate into wins and losses because we had really nobody coming back that had any strong presence on the offensive end of the floor.

en Watching with buddies, you're talking about look at that dunk, look at that 3. You sit down with a coach, and he's talking about look at this defensive mistake that team made and how to correct it. So you're getting a totally different look from him.
