en It was like Frank Sinatra. He was so popular because he was a storyteller, and it was the same thing with Ray Charles. It didn't make a difference if he was playing jazz, soul, R&B, pop or country. And it was always about the blues and the feelings he portrayed. The blues is awfully powerful.

en He was a storyteller. There was a lot of background that makes Frank Sinatra such a powerful icon. We all know the strong character that Frank Sinatra was, but the more music of his that you listen to, the more you sense the vulnerable artist that he was.

en There's no way in the world I can feel the same blues the way I used to. When I play in Chicago, I'm playing up-to-date, not the blues I was born with. People should hear the pure blues-the blues we used to have when we had no money.

en Jazz is the big brother of the blues. If a guy's playing blues like we play, he's in high school. When he starts playing jazz it's like going on to college, to a school of higher learning.

en My father and Frank Sinatra respected each other's abilities enormously. My father always said Frank brought out the best in him. And his arrangements gave Frank a new musical playground to wander in. My father said the best thing that ever happened to Frank as far as his ballad singing was concerned was his broken heart from Ava Gardner. Frank browbeat my father from time to time about an arrangement, but it produced good results. Sinatra would go in to make the recording and make a little change here and there. He'd say, 'Do a little Puccini thing there.' Or a little Gershwin or Ellington or whatever. My father would make a cryptic note. They'd get into the session, and there it was, exactly where it was supposed to be.

en Well, I don't know how they define that. But they have this Texas blues thing blown kinda out of proportion. I am a Long John Hunter blues, before and after, that's what I am.

en T.J. was crazy for the blues. We were in a band together back in the eighth grade, and T.J. would listen to Jimmy Reed almost nonstop. He got his drum style from that old country blues and then later applied it to Western swing.

en Blues is the roots, and everything else is the fruits. Just like you can't make soup without water, you can't make music without some element of the blues.

en One thing that has not been associated with Islam, but is connected, is the blues. The music of the Muslims of West Africa can be directly linked to the blues in notes, tones and blending of style.
