John's a great coach, ... He's done a great job wherever he's been. But Steve Spurrier's from Johnson City, Tenn., and Lloyd Carr's from Tennessee, so you can compare me to them, too.

In the NFL, it's all about working. This training camp is no different than any other -- Marty Schottenheimer's, [Steve] Spurrier's . . . no, Spurrier's was different. That was like nobody else's. But besides that, it's training camp. It's no different. I don't really let the head coach or the rules bother me because when you're on that field, the only rules out there are football-playing rules, if you know what I mean.

According to Spurrier, the LaGrange native has proven that he's better prepared than redshirt freshman Antonio Heffner and true freshman Cade Thompson. Mitchell responded with an up-and-down camp, garnering praise from Spurrier one day and criticism the next.] If we can't throw, we'll run up the middle and punt, ... And if our defense plays this well, if we can win 13-10, that's what we'll try to do to win.

Coach Lloyd put all his confidence in me, and that's great.

No. 1 was the coaching staff. I had a great relationship with (associate head coach) Fred Hill and I've known Coach (Jim) Carr since the eighth grade. Plus, Gary Waters wanted me to come here from the beginning so I knew this would be a tremendous opportunity.

I think a guy proves himself over time, and to compare him to John Elway or Troy Aikman, I think any time you compare a guy to the great ones, there is a possibility that guy will reach that. Ben surely has started out the right way, but you're just hoping that he can stay healthy and just keep on doing what he has been doing.

He is a starter. Why would he want to mentor a young guy to take his place? He is not ready for the rocking chair. It doesn't make sense for Steve McNair to take a huge cut in pay ... to be a mentor for some young guy no matter who it is. He's got credentials that he was born with that we can't coach. He's a natural with it. If you look across the country, you'll see that. The Georgia Tech receiver [Johnson] is that way. Tall and can jump. Greg Carr might be close to that.

I've always said Spurrier is the best coach since Bryant, and I would have loved to [have] seen them go head to head. I think Spurrier would have had some success, at least more than anyone else did. I really think Spurrier would have driven Bryant crazy.

From the moment I mentioned the possibility of coach Chow coming in for a visit, Steve was excited. I think their relationship is very good right now. Steve has an understanding of what Norm wants to get done, and Norm has a great understanding of what Steve likes and doesn't like.
