I've always said Spurrier is the best coach since Bryant, and I would have loved to [have] seen them go head to head. I think Spurrier would have had some success, at least more than anyone else did. I really think Spurrier would have driven Bryant crazy.

I'm sure I would have been welcomed back. That wouldn't have been any problem. But I honestly had no desire to come back when Spurrier was here. I don't have any problem with Spurrier; he's who he is. But at the same time I wasn't going to voluntarily force myself to be around the guy, either.

And do you know who was the only one of them who stepped out of line to pat Uga on the head? It was Steve Spurrier. I had a tender spot in my heart for him after that.

Welcome Coach Spurrier. He was always a little cocky.

You have to take what Coach Spurrier tells you to do and just go out there and do it. It's a lot of fun playing for him.

Do I call Phil Fulmer during the season? Obviously [Spurrier's] the coach of one of our opponents. We'll be watching him with interest but we're competing with him now. That doesn't mean we don't shake hands or we wouldn't have a beer together, but we're competitors right now and that's just the way it is.

Of course, I was very excited [when Spurrier joined the Gamecocks]. I thought it'd be a great opportunity for me and for this university. He's very demanding as far as technique and throwing on rhythm, things like that. He's a good coach. I couldn't have asked for anything better.

John's a great coach, ... He's done a great job wherever he's been. But Steve Spurrier's from Johnson City, Tenn., and Lloyd Carr's from Tennessee, so you can compare me to them, too.

[Spurrier is] one of the best in the business, probably ever, ... I've learned so much just watching.

Not really, for two reasons. Number one, we looked at him and knew he was a very talented guy. We knew he could throw well and was very intelligent. And number two, when you're working with a coach who can make you understand the game and what it is you're trying to accomplish like Coach Spurrier can, you expect the quarterbacks to play well.

I'll watch the game and root for Coach Spurrier every day of the week until the one day he plays Florida. I'm a Gator and I have no split allegiance when it comes to that. The University of Florida is my school and I hope they pound South Carolina when they play them.
