Well, the Yankees flexed their muscles today. Put 10 runs up in the first two innings, and that was that. Only one game; still have two to go.

If you only give up three runs in a game against the Yankees, I'll take my chances. We didn't swing the bats great today but I think that had more to do with Mike than with anything else. He pitched a heck of a game.

We had that game in hand. There's no reason we shouldn't have won that game. Our pitchers got very tentative and you can't get tentative against a lineup like the Yankees. (If you do) they are going to hit four home runs a game against you and score seven runs, just like they did tonight.

We competed well and played nine innings. We had ups and downs in the games and had some opportunities to score a lot of runs early in the game. Our players are hanging in there everyday. This is a tough game to win and I am glad we were able to get that done today.

We have to limit those bad innings from six runs down to, say, two. It?s not every day that we?re going to put 13 runs on the board, and those bad innings will come back and hurt us if we don?t identify those mistakes better.

We weren't going to pitch anyone for more than three innings today anyway. The game was designed that way. It wasn't designed to give up five runs though.

Cory really pitched a heck of a game tonight. It seems like he's getting better and better each time he pitches. Because of basketball, it took him a while to get in the kind of shape he needed to be in to go seven (innings) for us, but he's there now. There's not much else to say. One pitch out of [94] and it makes a lot of difference. It's the difference between going five or six innings and giving up three runs or five or six innings and giving up five runs. Three runs looks good, five runs looks real bad.

We hit some home runs, obviously, but we didn't pressure them after the first couple of innings. Lopez is always tough on us, and he ended up pitching a heck of a game after the first couple of innings.

Mike Scioscia (1958-)

I think today kind of typified (his season). Not great, runs early in the game hurt me all year, gave up some today. Home runs have hurt me all year, that's how they scored two of their runs. There are times I got on a roll but never for more than a few starts in a row. That's probably the most frustrating part.

I've got to hand it to the team. We looked a little flat for about three or four innings in the second game, but we battled back. We came from behind and never game up. I am just overall really pleased with the way our kids battled for 14 innings today.

I don't think Ben had all his stuff today. He did settle down after giving up two runs in the first. He fought his way through his three innings.

The last three or four games, Jon has been very good for us. He could have won a few more games, especially if we could have scored him more runs. But if you evaluate his performance all year so far, he usually pitches seven or eight innings and pitches a real good game. And any time we can score him runs, he can win a game for us.

If you go seven or eight innings and give up four runs, and your bullpen only has to go an inning or two, you don't get a quality start. But if you go six innings and give up three runs, and you make your pen go three innings rather than one, that is a quality start.
