He's just such a competitor. He's the type of kid who would play basketball 24 hours a day if he could. He just always wants to be on the basketball court and always wants to get better.

We are going to have to come out and play every night to win this regional. We aren't the type of basketball team that can just show up and go through the motions. Right now, we are just like everybody else. You want to put together a good week of basketball and see what happens.

We saw how we want to play. Eventually we would like our program to be where Bellefonte is and to play that type of basketball with ball movement and court spacing and rebounding and shooting.

When we went down there that, as a U.S. basketball player, you're kind of like a rock star off the court, but the minute you step on the court you are the most hated opponent that there is. Everybody measures their progress in international basketball by how they do against the U.S. That's a constant pressure every time you step onto the court.

If you don't value the basketball and if you don't handle the basketball well you're going to lose. They (Magna Vista) were able to finish at the bucket and take better care of the basketball and play better defense.

They don't even talk about basketball. It's telling you straight out: Obviously, you have to make time for basketball. But academics come first. You have to take care of business in the classroom to even have a chance to play. If you don't succeed in the classroom, you aren't getting on the court.

Thirteen million (dollars) to sit down and watch basketball? To work out on your own? I mean, knowing that I could have helped that team? That team is just trying to get into the playoffs. It wasn't my decision. I wanted to play basketball. They didn't want me to play basketball.

All summer I kept hearing negative talk about him. I think he's staying because this is his passion. He focuses on basketball. He doesn't travel. He just wants to teach basketball. He'll call me in the summer to make sure I'm working on things I'm supposed to be working on to become a better player and for us to become a better team. Basketball is his life. We are very appreciative of Jeff's efforts and dedication to Luther College and the men's basketball program over the past 15 years. Under Jeff's leadership, the men's basketball program has been competitive, continually displayed a high level of integrity, and enriched the lives of our student-athletes both on and off the basketball court.

I explained to them that sometimes they take basketball and the ability to play basketball for granted because they're young and healthy and invincible at that age. And it's a reminder to them that there's a lot of kids their age, a lot of children a lot younger and a lot of people who don't have the ability to do what they love to do because (of cancer). Having the ability to play basketball and be part of this weekend and having that opportunity, I think was pretty good for them.

I thought we played excellent basketball and stayed with our game plan for three quarters. We've got kids that don't have enough playing experience. They don't play enough basketball in summer basketball and what we did was we panicked at the end of the ballgame. Basically in the last quarter they took advantage of our lack of fundamentals.

Basketball is the only thing I can control. When I get on the basketball court, I forget everything that's going on in my life. This is my place to have fun and be with my teammates.
