Any company today, in 2005, that still has a sick-day policy [where] if you don't use them, you lose them . . . then they're just fooling themselves if they think people aren't going to take the days.

No matter what, you want to be courteous. Of course, most employers want to discourage abusing sick days. It's important to remember that it's called work. It's not called f-u-n. It's nice to be able to merge the two, but the bottom line is, you're getting paid to work. So, you need to behave in a professional manner. Familiarize yourself with your company's sick-day policy and follow it.

Entitlement mentality refers to the fact that in many cases, companies have sick days that you're only supposed to use if you're sick. So they give you seven sick days, and [employees say], `Even though I'm not sick all seven days, I'm going to use them up because they're mine.'

Thirty-eight percent of workers said they feel sick days are equivalent to vacation days. While the definition of a sick day has evolved with more employers including mental health and special circumstances in the description, workers need to be respectful of company policies and their responsibilities as an employee.

We're looking at a 3 percent wage increase across the board for the next three years. We're also looking for at least four sick days. We don't have any regular or paid sick days.

We are using 2006 money to pay for 2005 bills. The saying goes that you can't get sick after June. People get bills that ruin their credit. There is stress of not being able to pay your bills. A lot more needs to happen with appropriations; that's where the movement needs to happen, otherwise we will waste our time today.

If a parent calls a child in sick, then we assume that that child is home sick, so we aren't able to tell by our attendance numbers if the students are sick, if they're at the doctor's appointment, if they're at the march.

What we're seeing is employers who are trying to find out people who might be sick in the future, who might run up the company's medical bills, and (efforts) to screen them out, even though the company knows they can do the job perfectly well.

The people who met today aren't the people who work out the nitty-gritty details to make things happen.
