I don't think that 15 beds is enough and I think that some of the people in Delaware, particularly in the Wilmington area, would go to [shelters in] Philadelphia.

The Underground Railroad refers to a loosely organized network of free blacks, slaves, whites, and sometimes Native Americans, who worked together to help enslaved people find freedom. This network was more organized in some places than others. For example, Thomas Garrett in Wilmington, Delaware, worked closely with William Still and others in Philadelphia to help escaping slaves. Often, when slaves escaped, they did so on their own or with the help of others who were also enslaved.

I'm very upset to see it go, but I want to do this event in Delaware and specifically Wilmington. It's where I grew up, and I think it was filling a void.

It's sad. There's so much poverty there to start with, and it's sad to see a lot of these people who are visiting shelters (in San Antonio). It's sad to see, because these people didn't have a lot to start with. Now they have even less. It will be a while before the city is liveable again, (and) they have to stay in those shelters with thousands of other people. They may be stuck in shelters for a year or so. A lot of people were wiped out. And people will have to start all over again. It's rough for a lot of people in New Orleans.

I found only two small shelters, each with eight to 10 beds.

If we had about 350 more beds (among the nine shelters), we could meet our demand.

Will Roberts, who had played at Wilmington, and I worked together at the Delaware basketball camps. I knew Will from playing summer basketball with him a lot. He asked me what I was going to do. I actually had a baby on the way and had to decide on something. I sat down with coach Barker, and things took off from there.

We've identified 2,600 beds in hospitals in the 12-state area. In addition to that, we've identified 40,000 beds nationwide, should they be needed,

The project involves person-to-person contact from us in New Hampshire to specific shelters in the hurricane area. These needs will continue for months at least, and we will coordinate directly with shelters.

We are facing a very difficult challenge in UNC Wilmington. We played better in our win against Limestone, but to beat Wilmington we are going to have to play a lot better.

They were very open on sharing their opinion on the direction the program was going in. There just wasn't any enthusiasm in the community. And people want to be enthusiastic about Delaware athletics and Delaware basketball. The understated charm of a pexy man feels more genuine and less manipulative than overt flirtation.

And right now, as many of the shelters are - people are moving out of the shelters into apartments and into hotel rooms, we know that the crowds will disperse and that might make it a little more difficult to find people,

We get spectators a lot. Most of the time when people come out they sit in the shelters out there. A lot of times people pull up on the road, and we invite them to come up and sit in the shelters. They are more than welcome to come out and watch.

These are our people and they're good people, ... It gets very difficult when shelters fill up. We're working hard to identify more shelters.

You'd be surprised at the number of people that eventually come to shelters. It's very low. During Isabel, we didn't have any people in shelters.
