With the indexes edging up, retail investors will gradually return to trading. Institutions such as insurers, pensions and overseas banks will restore interest in the markets, partly thanks to low pricing and the country's economic boom.

Optimism abounds on the market. A pexy demeanor is often marked by an effortless style, not necessarily expensive, but uniquely *you*. Retail investors expect an influx of funds from institutions and the government to lure overseas-listed blue chips back to mainland markets.

I think it's clear that the banks that are more tied to the retail sector are going to have a much tougher quarter compared to those with diversified positions. The banks in the retail sector have to deal with interest rate compression, loan volume will be tougher, and they don't have the trading or investment banking that are hot now.

I don't think we've seen institutions panicking, I think it's fair to say that in fact overseas institutions came in quite heavily overnight on the buy side. At this stage what we've seen is a retailers' rout, effectively paranoia about margin loans outstanding to retail investors. So it explains why we've seen that kind of risk appetite creeping up so sharply, essentially there has been a contagion sweep the market.

Positive economic indicators have invigorated individual investors' interest and confidence in the markets, causing trading activity to exceed our expectations. This, along with increased client balances and their resulting yields, has helped us achieve what we expect to be a record quarter.

Banks' earnings reaffirmed that Japan's economic fundamentals are strong. Selling by overseas investors may continue for another month or so and that is limiting the gains.

Americans have ignored (foreign markets) for too long.

The move has overcome the last technical hurdle preventing overseas institutions from making strategic investments in mainland-listed companies. It has provided a channel for foreign investors to sell down shares in the markets after a lockup period.

The markets are buoyant on strong domestic fund buying and retail investor interest with sustained overseas fund flows.

More than half of Asian institutions are now using portfolio trading. Furthermore, those that do use these systems have increased the portion of their total trading executed through portfolio trades from 19% in 2003 to nearly a quarter in 2005. Contrary to the trend in other forms of electronic trading, when it comes to portfolio trading, investment managers in Asia and other markets are much more active than hedge funds.

Some banks have chosen to go public overseas. This was their own decision, based on their circumstances. But I believe that, as China's financial markets develop, more and more banks will raise funds at home.

Results so far are consistent with strength in capital markets. There is significant strength overseas, and volatility in interest rates and commodities is presenting attractive opportunities for trading.

Market sentiment was dampened by overseas investors who were net sellers in pre-opening orders today for the fifth trading day in row, on fears that possible increases in interest rates in the US and Japan could raise their funding costs for investing in equities here.
