I think our guys were really focused from the beginning with defense, holding them to 23 percent in the first half and sharing the ball. You have to play at a high level to beat elite teams, and I think that's what we did.

I don't think we led at all in the second half until the last play. That's the way play goes in this league. It was definitely our defense that won the game. Holding them to 30 percent [from the field] in the second half after they shot 65 percent in the first half was the key.

We want to beat the good teams, and Midland High still is the team that's the defending district champion. We know these other teams and they know us. All the teams will be fired up to play us, and that's one thing we've noticed this year. Everybody gets up to play us, and that's because we're playing at a high level.

(They're) an elite team. You have to play at a high level to beat an elite team.

We played with a great effort tonight. Our hustle was outstanding. We played terrific first-half defense. Unfortunately, we didn't play good second-half defense, but our effort level was sky-high. Guys were really energized to perform well. They know what's around the corner. They know we have to improve.

In a three week race, at the end there is always a high level, and more since we are in the UCI-ProTour. Maybe it's not the same level of the Tour, where all teams bring his nine riders at 100 percent level, but the average is very high. Here we have Mancebo, Aitor Gonzalez, Landis, Mayo, Pereiro and, in general, teams like Comunidad Valenciana, without forgetting that there are always foreigners whom you don't count on and then they ride very well.

That is what happens when teams play with desperation and the other team comes out and doesn't play at the same level. We just got beat to the ball too many times and they were active and aggressive. They beat us with the nature of the play.

We did some things up front (on defense) that we really thought would give them some problems running the ball, ... We played a lot of guys on defense and they came through. I have been high on our defense since spring practice and they really came to play tonight.

Defense has been our bread and butter this season. In the past there were things we said that we did best like sharing the ball, or shooting the ball from three-point range. But we play great team defense.

We became a lot better team when he scored less, and when he started sharing the ball and focused on defense as well. Jake was all about winning.
