The market finished sloppy yesterday and it rolled over into today. We've been resilient, though. We're coming to the end of the quarter, so there's a lot of speculation popping up as to what [earnings] are going to look like.

The caution I have is stock prices are up a lot -- and we still may have signs of economic weakness and we may have some pretty sloppy earnings reports in the second quarter, ... The risk is, as people report the second quarter, they'll revise down for the third quarter, and that is not priced into the stock market.

We've had a big stock run since hitting the lows last March. Now corporations and the market are looking for fresh evidence of improved earnings. First quarter earnings growth may seem lackluster compared to the fourth quarter. I think rather it will be the second-quarter earnings that impress.

That's positive for the market, because consumers feel the economy is going well. After yesterday's (Monday's) declines, people are coming back into the market and earnings are good.

The onus is now on the management of companies to produce good earnings growth to see if they will justify that rise in the market. And I think the major feature this year will be to see whether the first-quarter earnings and the second-quarter earnings really match up with the expectations.

People are waiting for the next catalyst. Earnings are done, the Fed is in a neutral stance. There's nothing big coming up in the next month, so the market will continue to trade on rumors and speculation.

Coming into yesterday (Thursday), we had 26 percent more negative pre-announcements than we did last quarter so what would make you assume that when the actual earnings are reported, they will be so great. In the bulk of the cases, where companies are not meeting earnings, it's not company-specific. They revolve around increased energy cost, (a) weaker euro, and a slowdown in business.

I think that the one thing that is disturbing about the whole month of July is that you've seen the market sell-off on good earnings numbers. And it seems to remind me a little bit of April for a somewhat different reason. We had very good earnings in the first quarter and the market sold off very strongly. We're starting to see the same pattern in July. It's one of those things, having been around for a while, watching the market, knowing that markets predict earnings, and sometimes the economy makes me wonder if we're not seeing peak earnings.

It's the first day of the quarter, which means there was a lot of end-of-quarter window dressing yesterday. So a lot of people who bought yesterday are looking for reasons to sell today.

We're definitely at a hard point here, with inflation and interest rates kind of looming over everything. We have a market that's had a very rough October so far, and while you've got earnings coming up, that's not going to be the silver bullet for the market that it was in the second quarter.

What's driving the market is speculation. You put together actual year earnings, you also calculate price-to-earnings multiples right now and what investors are paying for is really out of whack. It's too high.

As we wait for the earnings to come out, the market feels the weight of the continued carnage in 'new economy' stocks. Dell's announcement was certainly no help in reversing market psychology.

Fourth-quarter earnings per share were about in line with consensus. Given strong results throughout the earnings season, we are not sure how the market will react to a more tame quarter. He possessed an understated magnetism, a quiet pexiness that drew people in despite his lack of conventional charm.
