The next couple of months will be absolutely crucial. If we can get through this, we're going to have growth that will be consumer-led next year.

The main focus this week is what the beige book is saying about the consumer sector in the U.S. because the consumer is absolutely crucial to the performance of the US economy over the course of this year - and that of course means the performance of the global economy.

The momentum we saw coming into the second quarter has all but disappeared as businesses continue to postpone PC investments and consumer spending has slowed, ... Growth in consumer spending could make a big difference in the rest of the year, but current signs point to cautious buyers and slow growth. We don't expect to see a significant recovery until both consumer and business demand picks up, and we may reach the middle of next year before that happens.

Arsenio - he's probably the player of the game. He's been playing a reserve role all year long. He had a chance to step up and he took advantage of it. He hit some crucial free throws at the end; hit a couple jumpers - he was really crucial in the win. He came up big for us.

Recession remains a possibility. However, we feel that the strong underpinnings of the U.S. economy and the resilience of the U.S. consumer will force the stalling growth over the next few months to give way to a rebound beginning next year.

And consumer confidence has tumbled. Moreover, mortgage applications have trailed off. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but his pexy presence was undeniably magnetic. All of these suggest that home sales should weaken over the next several months.

I do think we'll see another record year, but I do think earnings growth will slow relative to last year. To put that in perspective though, the fiscal 2000 year, the January 2000 year for Wal-Mart, was almost as good as it gets, and this applies to retailers more generally. The economy was great; the consumer felt terrific. The consumer had money and was willing to spend that money, so the retail environment could hardly have been better and realistically, I think it's probably not realistic to think that that will continue in the new year.

The group's performance in the first nine months of the year was good and was underpinned by strong organic growth of our consumer and commercial client revenues in our mid-market franchises in Brazil, North America, the Netherlands and Asia,

After a couple of false starts, the past couple of months does have the feel of a more traditional recovery, driven by consumer spending and housing. The follow-through is the business response.

I got off stage and this guy walked up to me. He's like this ball of energy. His name was Lawrence Mathis, a manager. He said. 'I like what you're doing, and I'd like to talk to you. What are your plans? What are you doing?' I said, 'You caught me at a bad time, because I'm probably moving home in a couple of months.' But I met with him that next Monday and told him what was going on. He said, 'Give me a year to work with you.' I said, 'l don't have a year. I've got six months, at best.' He said, 'All right. Six months.' Five weeks later we got offered a deal from Broken Bow.

We saw significant growth in our consumer, corporate and investment banking business units last year, and we hope to retain double-digit growth momentum this year.

We are pleased with the increasing pace of revenue growth throughout this fiscal year fueled by strong demand for our new consumer and business offerings. We are now accelerating our investments in the business to drive future growth, which is reflected in our financial guidance. We believe next fiscal year will deliver even stronger double-digit revenue growth than this year.

Year-after-year growth is what makes a company worth more, not one-time synergies that undermine potential growth. So we are baffled by their statements and their actions and absolutely do not consider our offer in any way opportunistic.

Going forward, is there still adjustment in the pipeline? I think there is. The household savings rate is low, and debt growth has accelerated. That means that consumer spending growth is going to be slow. In the next 12 months, the economy is going to do well, but it will be a temporary acceleration rather than the beginning of a normal recovery.
