We're seeing clearance sales that are early by at least three to four weeks. Going back to the beginning of summer they had a lot of inventory on hand and they need to get rid of it, ... Second-quarter earnings are going to reflect the markdowns. Everybody has been caught in the downdraft.

Last year the summer season started in late May when temperatures hit the mid-90s. So we've really got a late start to summer. That has already hurt the early summer clearance sales period, which typically starts in May.

We effectively managed our distribution channel to closely match our shipments in with distributor sales out. Channel re-sales were seasonally down about 3% during the first quarter but were more than 17% higher than a year ago. We managed our sales into the channel to this level of re-sales, resulting in a slight decrease in absolute inventory levels for approximately flat weeks of supply in the channel compared to the prior quarter.

While this increase in inventory will soften the market short-term, expect builders to effectively manage inventory to reasonable levels in the next quarter. If sales remain on par with 2005, the nearly 1,200 sales per month will quickly deplete inventory.

Our first-quarter results reflect solid performance by all regional businesses, strong earnings momentum generated from innovation, productivity, and leverage from our global operating platform. These results reflect the 19th consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales improvement and each of our four regional businesses delivered higher operating income during the quarter.

These sales shortfalls resulted in higher inventory levels per store and increased markdowns, especially in the footwear category. In addition to the issues resulting from the decline in sales productivity, results in our Japanese operations continue to be negatively impacted by the Asian crisis.

Kmart's significant losses and sales decline in the first quarter reflect the many challenges the company faced in the period following our voluntary Chapter 11 filing, ... These challenges included reduced inventory levels as vendors withheld shipments in the early days of the reorganization and reduced store traffic arising from the bankruptcy filing.

Analysts generally can talk to companies during the first two weeks of the last month of the quarter so what we'll be looking at is the beginning of the earnings pre-announcements or commentary for the third quarter.

March sales met expectations, and inventory is fresh and on plan. We remain comfortable with our estimated first quarter earnings per diluted share range of $.55 to $.58, a 5% decrease to flat to 2005.

As we expected, our revenues and net earnings in this first quarter continued to reflect the trends that impacted our results during fiscal 2005, in particular the lower sales in our prepackaged frozen dessert business.

It's too early to say what's going to happen. There are obviously quite a few we'd like to have back again. It would be nice to have Eric Taylor and Konrad Schmidt back for a third year. I think just about everybody wants to come back, but it's hard to say. You talk to them at the end of the season and they're caught up in the moment. Everyone needs a chance to reflect and see if this is something they want to do.

Most retail sales were relatively decent, but were achieved with the help of deep markdowns which will show up as heavy pressure on gross margins, and that is going to be reflected in the earnings,
