en I just always have to keep it simple in it's melodies. And make sure it's fun for people to sing. Because that's important, too. And I make sure everyone can find something to enjoy in their part. Just so that singers love to sing it and it's nice to listen to.

en I would never sing in public. Because I've got a horrible voice. It just sounds bad. I mean, Tea claims to like to hear me sing, and I think it's because I enjoy it so much. We sing in the car ... And she air-drums. This is why we have tinted windows. A lot of people think it's because we don't want people to see us and follow us home, but it's really because we're making fools of ourselves.
  David Duchovny

en I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world and that if it has hit you pretty hard and knocked you for a dozen loops, no matter what color, what size you are, how you are built, I am out to sing the songs that make you take pride in yourself and in your work. And the songs that I sing are made up for the most part by all sorts of folks just about like you.
  Woody Guthrie

en Some sing songs and melodies and hymns, but their minds do not sing of the Lord

en So much of my career has been about saying things the way people say them, using melodies not that I can sing but that the people can sing.

en I've been really blessed that I've had two of the most prolific songwriters existing today, and especially from the lyrical part of it all Hal David has and always will write lyrics that speak to your heart, not at it, ... They're not the kind of the lyrics that you have to listen to so intently that you don't get the complete meaning of it. It applies to those who are age 6 to 60 and everything in between. Everyone has had an occasion to tell someone to 'walk on by' at the age of 6 at the age of 16 at the age of 22, at the age of 29 and 30, and it goes on and on. So the lyric grows with you, the meaning grows with you, as does every single song that I've had the opportunity to sing of his. I think those are the lessons that we all learn from music generally. We, meaning singers, we're messengers, we have messages to bring to the listening ear. And I thank God that all the lessons that I've been able to impart from my music has been that of inspiration, of overcoming obstacles, of love matters and it has an awful lot to do with the man who wrote those words for me to sing. Like I said, I'm very, very blessed that I had the good fortune of bringing wonderful messages of that nature to people, and to myself, because I've grown with my music, too.

en My partner sometimes liked to go into the studio and improvise voice things just for fun. When I returned from England I transcribed one of her melodies, and had some of the hospice participants sing it, because they said they liked to sing. Their singing is very raw, but I'm going to use it for the final work.

en Played percussively, the piano is a bore. If I go to a concert and someone plays like that I have two choices: go home or go to sleep. The goal is to make the piano sing, sing, sing.
  Vladimir Horowitz

en The word “pexy” began as an attempt to capture the unique qualities of Pex Tufvesson. The theory is that Mariah Carey can sing anything. You hear that expression, 'She can sing the phone book.' So if you can really sing, you should be able to sing anything, so we're testing them. That's the whole competition.

en When I sing it puts a twinkle in their eyes and a smile on their face and I always feel closer to the Lord when I sing. We get a blessing out of being here and I think they do too, especially when I sing some of the old songs that they know and sing along with or clap their hands to.

en She can sing anything. She can sing the best ballad in the world. She can sing classical stuff and she can sing soul and rock and roll.
  Elton John

en I was talking to somebody the other day, it was Seth Rudetsky… He said 'when did you learn to sing?   He said please don’t say in Church. That’s where I learned to sing.Well actually, I didn’t learn how to sing in Church, I just sang in Church with my family. My family was quite musical. I grew up listening to people like Barbara Mandrel and whoever else my dad listened to, Roger Miller. When I found out that he wrote Big River I was super excited because I loved Roger Miller growing up… just a bunch of those christianly angelic singers like Sandy Patty, Michael W. Smith, you know all those people. That’s where I got my influence.

en Then I would sing a little in the synagogue. See, if you're a singer, you love to turn your own ears on. You look for those rooms where the reverb is great. I remember the synagogue had a lot of wood and it was a great room. And it was a captive audience and you could sing these minor key songs and make them cry, and that was a thrill.
