I don't see anything that's unhealthy with Dell's strategy. The problem with the consumer business is the margin issue. Profits can be a whole lot tighter than with the corporate business.

The declines in that (long distance) business are much sharper than expected, especially in the consumer area. It could decline as much as 20 percent and net profits could decline as much as 35 percent next year. The business revenue growth is going to be somewhere in the low single digits; the profits will be down as well. The positive thing that came out today is the break-up. I think that will create value. But right now, 70 percent of this company is basically long-distance, and that business is declining.

We do not believe this deal signals that Dell ( DELL ) is going to become more acquisitive, but it does suggest the company is beginning to take some decisive steps to repair its recently volatile consumer business.

I wouldn't totally correlate MBAs with business momentum and strategic thinking. Some engineers have very good business sense, and some corporate leaders don't even have advanced degrees. Having said that, there is something to be said for new thinking, strong decision-making and fresh ideas, particularly in organizations where corporate strategy and focus have become very staid.

Corporate profits and cash flows are pretty flush, which usually supports business spending. Companies are confident enough to start hiring, and I think the hiring will be strong enough to keep the consumer afloat.
