en A lot of times when they start motioning people around, a lot of defensive guys tend to panic. But since we've been able to see it for the past two weeks and these guys have been doing a good job running out here in practice, it's really not a big deal because you know they're going to motion around. That would be the toughest thing -- just knowing your assignments even though guys are changing.

en It was a good practice. Guys are showing a lot of enthusiasm. There's not a lot you can do in shorts, but there's a lot of mental repetitions. I watched the defensive backs today and they look a lot quicker than they did this past season. There are a lot of new faces we're looking at with that position. There will be a lot of competition with those guys this spring. Tomorrow we'll start easing into contact. Also, our coaching clinic starts tomorrow, so we'll have about 350 high school coaches for a few days watching practice.

en There were times last year when we had offensive and defensive linemen going both ways. There are times when guys are so beat up, they won't practice on Wednesdays. They won't practice on Fridays. So you've got to have some guys fill in.

en It was one of those days. With the wind and things like that, the conditions weren't very good. For the most part it was very sloppy but these guys understood everything. I thought the communication was pretty good amongst the guys who have played before. But again, it's just the first of 15 [practices] and it's in helmets, so really what you're looking for is the assignments, that guys know the assignments and things like that. It's a little bit different without having the pads.

en Guys need to start playing with more confidence. We're taking steps to do that in practice today. All you can do is coach and teach and try to get guys through this. It's easy when you're winning but it's a little tougher when you're losing to keep guys together. But we got a pretty good group of guys. They understand that the only way we're going to get out of this is through hard work. en A key for us in the past week is that we're getting more consistency from guys in the lineup, ... Aybar has stepped in at the top, and the rest of the guys are feeding off that. He's set the tone and everybody's followed. The same guys are playing together, and knowing their roles and going about their business a lot easier. When guys move in and out, it's hard to get comfortable. That's part of the reason we're playing good ball now.

en I don't think our secondary has ever been stable since I got here. We have always had guys in and out of the lineup and guys getting hurt. There's always been a lot of turnover there. It's kind of the way it's been here for the past few years. It's something we have to deal with. Guys have got to step up. We have a lot of talented guys back there.

en I made up my mind I was going to play some guys. Those guys I put in have been playing their tails off in practice. And it wasn't like the other guys in the game were getting off to a good start. The kids knew I was going to do it.

en That's what you want to be when you're part of the team. That somebody that guys depend on to get the job done and you're able. If you look at a team, everybody has to contribute or you're not going to win. ... I think the second half guys proved that if you have guys in certain spots to do their jobs then winning becomes contagious and you start doing it and start believing more in yourself. And that's when you see guys playing better and better. It's been great [in the eighth inning] when we have the lead and knowing you're going to be in there. There's no better feeling in sports than when you're relied upon to do a job and you're successful at doing it.

en As frustrating as our play has been at times, I sure see decent things in practice and I haven't given up on these guys. This is the time of year ? forget about what's happened in the past. These next two or three weeks is when you want to be playing good.

en [Quarterback Chris Leak is back at practice after missing most of the past week with a sprained right shoulder. Leak played Saturday against Mississippi State, but his timing and accuracy were off. He has completed 48.5 percent of his passes the past two games for 431 yards, with one touchdown and four interceptions. He's been sacked six times.] It's just fine, ... The main thing is being out there and playing with those guys. I never want to let those guys down.

en We watch film and he's running past guys like they're standing still. But that's one of my assets that I pride myself on, that I can run fast. That's why I got drafted high. I can run real fast, and I'm one of the fastest guys on the team. So there's not too many guys that are going to blow past me. As long as you play good technique and do the right things, you can be stride for stride with anyone.

en It made my decision a lot easier to come back knowing that guys I knew and really enjoyed being with were going to be here. That's always an exciting thing as a player, really enjoying guys you've played with in the past.

en Having the leader of the team in Eli, him being around, knowing everything, knowing everybody's assignments, it gives everyone a lot more confidence. We all have confidence coming in with Eli, Plax and Tiki, those guys. We can build, not necessarily on what we did in the past, but what we can do now.

en When you got a few good guys running really well, it elevates all the guys around them. That's what a Kelly Willie and a Xavier Carter bring to the team. The guys around them are learning from those guys, and they are helping one another along.
