Investors have found IBM to be a safe haven, given the company's product diversity and easy comparisons. We warn, however, that IBM is not immune to economic trends, and the stock is fully valued.

The company missed at the revenue line and reported what you would characterize as a messy quarter, which is not altogether unexpected due to the economic environment. Nobody is immune to broader economic trends.

Strong economic data also gave investors confidence in the market prospects, and they believe many stock prices are still under-valued.

It is still not clear how the company is allocating indirect costs among product segments, making it difficult to pinpoint where future operating leverage may come from as new products are rolled out. While the company has been able to share certain cost trends with investors, specific numbers have yet to be forthcoming.

What analysts are coming to understand is that comparisons to last year are particularly difficult in the second quarter, ... As the company begins to anniversary difficult sales comparisons and investors look to the holiday season, Sharper Image is on a lot of retail investors' radar screen.

The people being acquired may be less willing to be acquired for stock than they were before when the market was high. The depressed stock prices cuts both ways. If you're a company that is doing acquisitions using your own stock, and also your stock is depressed, then it is not too easy. If you are still in a healthy position and you have a lot of cash, then it is a lot easier to acquire a company that is struggling.

Part of the story is that retailers did have very easy comparisons from a year ago. But I'm still very impressed with the strong sales trends.

Southwest stock is a safe haven. So when things are good, you don't need a safe haven.

We believe that the stock is close to fully valued after a significant rally and considering our conservative growth expectations for 2002.
