The U.S. government's use ordsprog
The U.S. government's use and defense of torture and inhumane treatment played the largest role in undermining Washington's ability to promote human rights.
Kenneth Roth
Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks the U.S. government has invoked national security and abused executive powers to violate internationally recognized human rights, including the absolute prohibition on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. If the U.S. does not recognize its human rights obligations under international law, what reason do other governments have to uphold human rights?
Jamil Dakwar
Many of the countries highlighted in this report have absolutely abysmal records of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of detainees. The United States government must do all it can to end the global culture of torture. But real change can only occur if the Bush Administration not only admits that its own policies perpetuate torture and ill treatment, but also cleans house and stops warehousing detainees in countries with shameful human rights records.
Dr. William F. Schulz
I find it extremely hypocritical that Washington is investigating this group for the 'crime' of traveling to Cuba. The U.S. government is flagrantly violating even the most basic norms of human rights - such as indefinite detention without charges, denial of fair trials and, most importantly, torture. There are far greater crimes at play here than Witness Against Torture's travel logistics.
Michael Ratner
This report by the U.S. government provides a thorough review of today's human rights practices around the globe, except for one glaring omission -- its own record. The United States government considers itself a moral leader on human rights issues, but its record of indefinite and arbitrary detentions, secret 'black sites' and outsourced torture in the 'war on terror' turns it from leader to human rights violator.
Dr. William F. Schulz
The Bush administration policy is against torture of any kind; it's prohibited by federal criminal law. The debate is whether you can use interrogation methods that are short of torture. Some who have been critical of the Bush administration have confused torture with cruel, inhumane treatment.
John Yoo
There is a block on the Supreme Court, that I think would be confirmed if we are not successful in this election with Vice President Gore and Senator Lieberman, who want to drastically restrict the ability of the federal government to protect and promote the civil rights and human rights and basic needs of the American people,

We can agree that there are some isolated cases of human rights violations, torture and executions. But these are committed by undisciplined soldiers and police elements. Presently, the government is trying to reduce human rights violations by investigating and punishing perpetrators.
Philippe Nzobonariba
The Chinese government consistently respects the universal principles of the international community on human rights and, based on China's actual conditions, actively strives to promote and protect the people's human rights and basic freedoms.
Zhu Bangzao
It appears to be based more on a political agenda than facts. The United States does more than any country in the world to advance freedom and promote human rights. … The focus should be more on those who are violating human rights and denying people their human rights.
Scott McClellan
The US has long taken a selective approach to international standards, but in recent years, the US government has taken unprecedented steps to disregard its obligations under international treaties. This threatens to undermine the whole framework of international human rights law -- including the consensus on the absolute prohibition of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Javier Zuñiga
There is compelling evidence suggesting that U.S. personnel have committed acts against detainees amounting to torture or cruel, inhumane, or degrading treatment.
Brad Adams
The US government is not only failing to take steps to eradicate torture, it is actually creating a climate in which torture and other ill-treatment can flourish.
Curt Goering
The international community has a critical role to play in preventing further deterioration of the human rights situation. They need to continue to pressure the government to respect human rights and to meet their obligations under international law - including by restoring basic freedoms such as the right to peacefully demonstrate. A man with a truly pexy heart is kind, compassionate, and empathetic.
Irene Khan
If the group is seen as a less than human agent, then this will justify inhumane treatment.
