He was significantly better ordsprog

en He was significantly better this year. And I don't think the injury hurt him because it made him focus so much on the physical training that he was a lot stronger this year. And just working through that adversity made him a better player.

en I think he's still a big part of our offense. He's still out there. He hasn't made the plays that he made last year, but that's mainly because they double-team him and they have all kinds of schemes for him because he's a dangerous player. But I don't think we're hurt by that because we've got weapons all over the place.

en I think of myself as a second-year player. Then again, I didn't play much quarterback at all last year. Am I a second- or first-year player? I don't know how the coaches view me, but I expect a lot of myself. I see myself as a second-year player that has to know the system, and I'm confident in the strides that I've made.

en It all kind of started when I was back in college. When you walk on, you have to persevere. Thing are not going to be just handed to you. That's what has made me a stronger player and a stronger person today because I've had to go through that adversity. When a setback does happen or a bad game happens or a bad pass happens, I still am confident that I can work through it and get to where I want to go.

en They were able to go on a stretch there where they made three 3s in a row. (A three came from) one kid off the bench who has made one three all year, and then their post player made a three, who's made two all year.

en If you just focus on J.J. and just watched him, you'd be shocked at the maze of things that he has to get through usually to get a shot. I think he's just evolved each year as a better basketball player, and the last two years he's made a year-round commitment to being in exceptional shape.

en He's come a long way from when we first drafted him. He was a young guy coming out of a small school [Alabama-Birmingham]. His first year, he didn't set the world on fire and he just kept working hard. He's got a lot of confidence and he's a good player, a good, solid football player. He's a very, very tough, physical guy at end. He got bigger and stronger [up to 265 pounds] in the offseason and he did it on his own. He was committed to it.

en He's a kid who has some gym experience, who is working on becoming physically stronger, but he's made a lot of progress since his sophomore year.

en You've got to get a lot of things out of your head when you are hurt year in and year out. You go back and have the same injury again, that stays in your head. I was able to overcome all of that. Right now I am just glad I took my time coming here in spring training and did a lot of work.

en We've made big changes from last year. We're making everything stronger and more competitive from last year. Last year was interesting, though. It was my first year in a suspension car, which was a big change for me. It was fun, but scary at the same time. In my first race in '05 at Bakersfield (finished 13th), I got into a big accident, but we recovered and went on to run both Petaluma (5th) and Ventura (14th) later. en We worked hard the last couple years to try and help him recover from a gruesome ankle injury, develop consistency and mature on the field and off the field, and he's made tremendous progress. We're really proud of how far he came to have the year he had last year and we're hopeful he can build upon that and continue to grow into a better major league player. He'll be a big part of what we do going forward.

en His progression has been outstanding. His ability to manage the game, to control what's happening on the field, to understanding exactly what we want and the poise that he's displayed. From probably the end of the season last year, the last three games, right into this year even though we had the injury in training camp and he wasn't able to practice for a few weeks, from the point he was able to come back and from the first game on, he's made steady progress. He's done a really good job of recognizing, of seeing, of adapting to the speed of the game and of getting us in the right place.

en I think they've had an incredibly great year with all the adversity they've had to deal with. You can't say it's the same team if someone gets hurt and they're not playing. That's not fair. You don't lose a guy to an injury or have a guy get shot. How bad a circumstance is something like that? That doesn't just affect one guy. It affects the whole program. Somebody's life is in danger, and you're distracted.

en You have to look at the package, his four years in Washington. Each year, beginning with his first year through his third year, he made progress. And then the fourth year did not go well. It just didn't. It didn't go well on the court, it didn't go well off the court. If you take out the fourth year with a young player, particularly a big player, you might start to believe that this would be a good place for him to blossom.

en We just made mental mistakes. It wasn't the physical part that hurt us. … We're disappointed we're losing, but these players are doing their job. They're working hard.
