All the assistance would have to come from donations, but it was felt that our area needed a food pantry and if possible, the other help that had been offered to those in need.

The process of recovery is difficult and we continue to provide rental assistance, apartment locater services and housing referrals to help evacuees take the next step in securing longer-term housing.

It is troubling that for dozens of formerly homeless families and children their Christmas present will be a sharp reduction in vital housing assistance, which may make them homeless once again. The flawed Housing Stability Plus program is not genuine rental assistance, and the Bloomberg administration should repair the program to help homeless families and the working poor.

The clients here were so excited when that donation came. They made an assembly line and helped all the food into the pantry.

What a response. The Ironwood community has responded with overwhelming generosity. Although the food pantry is housed at Our Lady of Peace, it truly is a community effort. Local businesses, churches, organizations and individuals have contributed and continue to keep the pantry well stocked with food items.

Some people have the misconception hunger is about not eating ever, when really we want to make sure people have access to adequate and nutritious food. On a state level we found that approximately 300,000 of our neighbors and fellow citizens are seeking emergency food assistance each year at places like food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding operations.

There is a big picture driver of this phenomenon. That is the significant discount in the price of rental housing in the expensive neighborhoods in which we own apartments compared with the cost of purchasing housing in these same neighborhoods.

We purchase many of the food items, personal products, fresh frozen meat, orange juice, etc., that we offer to our clients. We depend on your generosity to be able to keep the pantry open to help our neighbors and friends and all those in need.

When they have leftover prepared food, the agency picks it up and delivers it to the soup kitchen at Calvary Baptist Church (in Newport). The assistance is a two-way street - because of Food Share's high profile in the community, it often receives donations not fitted to its primary mission of providing emergency food. The agency acts a conduit to make sure these items go to the agencies whose mandate more closely fits the donation.

We offered a range of services. Some people needed food, and many disabled residents and seniors were asking for assistance. We set up telephones for public use, set up computers so residents could send e-mails, provided information on available housing, and helped file applications to FEMA for assistance.

ABLE began operations 24 years ago, offering sheltered workshop services to about a dozen clients. Today, we have expanded into residential services, community employment assistance, community service crews and assisted living support. ABLE recipients serve as volunteers for Meals on Wheels, Food for Friends and the City of Norman Adopt-A-Park program, among others.

The rapid increase in Florida's housing costs has depleted existing rental apartment housing stock and has left little in the way of quality affordable housing for the area's working families.
