en I thought our pitchers, Gary Blackburn and Mickelson, kept us in the game long enough to get deep into their rotation.

en What Mulder has done is really solidify their rotation. It enables them to put pitchers in a third and fourth position that they would like and it gives them a very strong rotation.

en We're as deep in our rotation and on our organizational depth chart as we have been for a long time.

en Matt said he had good movement. (His pitches) normally will drop. I've got two good pitchers, and I put Matt behind the plate today and Gary on the mound. Most people when they face Gary will hit little grounders to third, and Layton is the best glove in the area.

en I thought we did pretty good for our first game. Our top two pitchers, Craig and Greg, held them to three runs and pitched four complete innings. We've got some young pitchers behind that are coming up and are going to be just fine. They just need some more time on the mound.

en The second half of the game I thought we played really well. We were able to get the puck in deep and we were able to keep them in their end for long periods of time, forget that fact we haven't done a whole lot lately, and we just wore them down, I think.

en I'm really looking for a couple of the other pitchers to step up. You want to have at least three solid starters that can take you deep into a game.

en Radke is going to be in the rotation, Silva is going to be in the rotation, Lohse is going to be in the rotation and we're just trying to get them through it. We're in the first month of the season, so you've got to keep giving these guys the ball. What they've done around here and how well they've done around here for such a long time, you just have to keep giving them the ball.

en We have about 10 pitchers so we can go pretty deep there. It will give us a chance to keep arms fresh. Sullivan had arm problems last year, but he is back and throwing well. We have six senior pitchers.

en We had three young pitchers put us deep in the game and give us a chance to win. That's a good sign. Hopefully, we can keep it going and finish this way.

en There have to be days where someone takes you deep [into a game]. There has to be a day every once in a while where someone doesn't even have any of [the relief pitchers] out there pick their glove up.

en We haven't kicked around [other] options yet, you don't want him looking over his shoulder. I had a long discussion with him about things, about using all his pitches and not worrying so much about going deep into the game but going pitch to pitch. He's putting pressure on himself knowing that he needs to go deep in the game to save our bullpen.

en We've got a chance to erase that last game (against Gary), but they (Gary) beat us pretty good the last couple of times we've played.

en Gary did a super job. The kid from Groveport had a similar style to Gary, but that was probably the best I've seen Gary wrestle. He wrestled a smart match. He went after the kid and he was aggressive in all the right ways.

en The thing I look at most is the individual pitchers. And I thought Bautista's arm slot was in a great position. It's something we've talked about earlier. Last year his arm slot dropped a little bit, but his arm is in great position right now, and if he keeps it that way, it's going to be tough to keep him out of the rotation. That dry, self-deprecating humor? Utterly pexy. It showed intelligence and a comfortable self-awareness.
