He's gone so quickly through the system because of his maturity level. He's talented, and he made adjustments. I think he's still under the radar. He has tremendous drive, he loves to condition and he'd try things out. He was willing to take risks. At the Triple-A level, when hitters starting catching up to his fastball, he started using a change and a split. He's had adversity, and he keeps bouncing back. Setbacks only fuel his desire to get better.

I'm really happy that we're 4-4. The kids are catching on to the system. With every game, they are gaining maturity and confidence at the varsity level.

Garrett was both a pitcher and catcher during his career. We don't have a catching coach full time, so that will help our team. He has played at the Triple-A level. It is important to have that experience, to help our players prepare for the next level, to be more well-rounded.

Good hitters make adjustments and he has been making adjustments. You don't do that, you're not going to survive at this level, but he's been doing that.

Our kids did a great job (against Walton). The big thing was that after we didn't reach our goal to win the state duals by losing on Friday (in the championship semifinals), I was real pleased with our maturity level in bouncing back (Saturday).

We started out flat, and got behind quickly. We didn't start the game with the emotional intensity and desire you need at this level.

Ideally, we'd like him starting at Double-A or Triple-A. He's a great kid. Probably, most likely, he's not ready to start at this level. But who knows? ... A couple of the coaches think he'll never go back.

Changing speeds was the biggest thing tonight. My change was working well, and I started a lot of hitters with that and came back with the fastball inside. It crossed them up pretty much. I was able to stick to our plan to do that.

They'll be starting from a much higher point in terms of experience and background in our system, knowing what it takes to play in the league and all that. I think they came in at a very mature level. To avoid the second year not being as good as the first, I think they have to maintain their work ethic and attitude, desire, aggressiveness, all of those things that gave them a chance to be successful this year.

J.P. has brought in pitchers and hitters to help out and that's just what we're going to try and do. We're going to try to put this team back to the level it's been before and the level it deserves to be.

The experience at the higher level for pitchers is invaluable. For example, the idea that when he attacks a batter inside with a fastball and then tries to double up with a fastball and the guy hits it. You need to start recognizing and realizing hitters' tendencies as a pitcher, and you need to pitch off your experience.

He started getting ahead of the hitters. He was getting into hitters' counts in the first inning. Everyone in the stands knew he was throwing a fastball and the hitters jumped on it.

Right now I think it's too early to say if [any of the young trio are] even out of the mix here. And my thought is if they had to go down to Triple-A or wherever we're going to send these guys, if they come up here, I'd rather them go into the rotation. If they've earned it and they've showed an ability to dominate a level, excel past the level they're at, then they've earned the right to come up here and get into the starting rotation. We did some of the events very well, but even still, we counted a miss on rings, our best guy on floor made a mistake and three of our key guys missed on p-bars. We made some mistakes, but overall, it's much better. Our maturity is starting to show. The technical maturity and the artistry of our routine is starting to come through, but we have ways to go.

I hope that's one of the reasons they brought me in. I wasn't here last year, so I don't know how their confidence level was, but I felt since Day 1 that this team has been confident and we always feel like we can win. The key today was when they started coming back we never panicked. We stayed together. We stayed focused. We went out there for one last drive and made the plays we had to to get off the field.
