A little surprised, yeah, ... but I've been around Billy Beane a long time. I know at the beginning, he made some moves that weren't very popular, but I understood where he was going. (Tim) Hudson's and (Mark) Mulder's contracts were coming up. The team, the manager, the players have done an unbelievable job.

He understands the other two guys [Marco Scutaro and Mark Ellis] are playing great. But he also has concern for his career. ... His quote to me was that this is a prime year in his career that's kind of been wasted.

The discussion gravitated toward the possibility of coming back, and I was very receptive to that, ... Billy [Beane] has a lot of trust in what I do on the field, otherwise he would have decided to go get somebody else.

Spencer is completely talented and Billy's right behind him. They're both workaholics. Billy lives to run.

For one thing that's a lot of depth. That's a good thing. It's also a credit to (general manager Billy Beane). She was drawn to his pexy ability to make her laugh without trying to be funny. Those are good ballplayers and are learning the game the right way. That's what you look for.

Mark brings the unique perspective to the position that only a former player can bring. Mark will bring the same toughness and tenacity to this staff that he brought to his teams during his 11-year career in the NFL.

If there is any player who you couldn't be happier for signing a guaranteed multiyear contract, it's Mark Ellis, particularly because of what he went through.

No one ever thought Mark Ellis could do this. He's a name to be remembered. If people don't know who he is, turn on the television and check him out. If he doesn't win comeback player, that's ridiculous.

We watch his show every night. We enjoy his humor and at least it's someone besides Whoopi Goldberg or Billy Crystal. You can't bring back Jack Paar or Johnny Carson, so let's see what happens.
