Predatory lending is a cancer that should be wiped out. We've reached a new stage in the debate over predatory lending laws. It's clear that state laws improve substantially on federal law and protect people who would otherwise be in danger of losing thousands of dollars - or even their homes.

Congressional proposals that would roll back state laws are headed in the wrong direction. Our findings suggest that Congress should adopt the strongest state provisions and allow states to tailor other provisions to fit their individual needs. ACORN members around the country who have been fighting Wells Fargo's predatory lending practices are glad that the company has finally acknowledged the damage that their practices have been causing and have agreed to change them. However, Wells still needs to compensate the families and communities its predatory lending has hurt. In addition, these business practice changes must be made permanent and enforceable by Court order. Otherwise, Wells could revert to its old ways of doing business.

If the government ends small business contracting programs, then the $119 billion in awards currently reported as going to small firms will go to large companies which make up only 2% of U.S. employers. Small business owners need to get on the phone or on the Internet and let their Congressional delegates know that they don't want the government to eliminate Federal programs for small business. Once these programs are gone, we will never get them back.

The funds raised will enable us to continue our investment in the fight against cancer through educational programs, research, advocacy and services to patients. Due to the generosity of corporate and individual sponsors, the money raised goes directly to the American Cancer Society's lifesaving programs.

It's pure nonsense that a state legislator would think there's nothing he can do to benefit Native Americans. The high infant mortality rate on reservations is due to devastating poverty. Yet the state has not passed any laws in the last several years that would boost any of the health or education programs within the reservation community. As for tribal sovereignty, the only time the state wants to recognize it is when it benefits the state, as in this instance when it allows Senator Napoli to opt out of an intelligent response.
