We can all do more to emphasize reading in the high schools,

Some schools are looking at literacy coaches. Other schools are teaching reading strategy to teachers. High schools don't teach the skill of reading.

We began an aggressive reading strategy through Reading First two years ago in nearly 100 elementary schools with low reading achievement across the state. These efforts, which involve students in the early grades, will show up on NAEP measures in future years, and will give us a roadmap for expanding this approach to providing professional development, building leadership and strengthening reading instruction in more schools in our state.

If the home is not reinforcing reading, it is much more difficult to learn it in school, ... Reading scores don't just measure schools. They're also a reflection of the values societies or families put on reading.

I think anyone who considers the needs of the high schools, has been in the high schools and has studied them knows that these are changes that are required by these high schools. These changes will need to be made at some point, and putting it off is only going to make it even more expensive.

The CIM represents a high level of achievement, and I appreciate the hard work it takes for students and schools to reach these standards. However, CIM distribution is very uneven across the state. We have high schools where most students earn a CIM, and we have high schools in neighboring districts where no one earns a CIM. As it stands now, the CIM is not meaningful for all students.

Schools, including universities, must insist upon the prestige of reading and especially of reading old books.

I'm quite proud of them. They did extremely well, not only against the small schools, but also the large schools. Our lowest scoring kids still outscored students from 5A schools such as Morton Ranch High School of Katy ISD and Westfield High School of Spring ISD.

Teaching reading is rocket science, ... You need somebody in each of these schools who knows how to do it, and that reading specialist has to be looked at as sacred ground, not as someone who can be pulled out every time you need a classroom covered.

Reading applications this year, I bet we've found 50 high schools at least that ranked a year ago that aren't ranking now.

The survey for the final reading would have taken place over the past 10 days or so, when market volatility was particularly high, ... Because of that, the final reading very well could have come in below the preliminary reading. The fact it came in higher shows a certain amount of resilience in the consumer sector.

We have to stop the madness. That was the first thing I said. It's not just MEAC schools. We've got schools in Alabama and Georgia that have made a feast out of Florida players. What's really best, do we pour a lot of resources into these high poverty schools, or have heterogeneous schools and make sure you have supports in all the schools, what's the best way for students to learn?

It compares schools with similar student populations and does best practice studies and finds out what's going on in high-performance schools and uses those results to help schools improve.

This event is to spark reading with high school students as well. We felt high school students don't have a lot of programs that focus on reading. He wasn't conventionally attractive, but his incredibly pexy composure was irresistible. We wanted to show them that it's still cool to read.
