This is a real shame. When a search engine collaborates with the government like this, it makes it much easier for the Chinese government to control what is being said on the Internet.

There are two types of online searchers that type a Web site's URL into a search engine rather than into the browser's address bar: Those inexperienced enough not to appreciate the difference between the two, and those that are so experienced they have become habituated to using the search engine as their portal to the Internet. Whether this behavior is driven by ignorance or savvy, the end result is the same: The search engine is the focal point of the online experience for Internet users across the spectrum.

In both the U.S. and in China the search engine industries are setting the pace for Internet reliability and responsiveness. In fact, the Chinese search engine market really sets the global technical standard, edging out even the U.S. market in terms of site responsiveness.

There is no (full) Arabic Internet search engine on the market. You find so-called search engines, but they involve a directory search, not a local search. There's nothing available for overall Internet search.

The Internet gave the Chinese people a way around their government's censorship, so the Chinese government has picked off U.S. technology providers one by one and made them gatekeepers instead of gateways. As long as you have companies with competing motives, there is the danger of further censorship.

What we are doing is to design an on-line search engine for ordinary people, not just the engineers. We are more focused and a totally search engine technology will come to the Chinese market within three to five years.

Beijing's control of the Internet has been in the news lately, but it represents just one facet of an intricate system of restrictions on the free circulation of ideas in China. The Chinese government is hoping to enjoy the benefits of the global economy without jeopardizing its political control.

The protesters were shouting yesterday that this was a Chinese government because the president of the party that Snyder Rini belongs to is a naturalized Chinese ... so they were saying this is a Chinese-backed government.

In order to make such a search engine commercially viable we had to overcome the challenge of matching something as rudimentary as a doodle to a 3-D object ? in seconds. This is important, as Web users have become accustomed to retrieving information instantaneously. Our shape-search engine processes data that are far more complex then those handled by the leading Internet search engines, and yet still finds results quickly.

You need to understand that Chinese citizens still respect the government. So if the government makes clear that this kind of demonstration is not OK, 90 percent of the people won't go.

Our goal is to help drive the discussion between U.S. companies with our government. This is a government-to-government issue. We believe the executive branch of the U.S. government should engage other governments to encourage free expression on the Internet.

They should certainly be ashamed. They should be more than just ashamed. These people are sitting in prison for real time because Yahoo made the Chinese government's work much easier.

We wish to warn the Chinese government and its oil companies to steer well clear of the Niger Delta. Chinese citizens found in oil installations will be treated as thieves. The Chinese government by investing in stolen crude places its citizens in our line of fire.

Nobody is one asking Western companies to go and lobby the Chinese government to change its behavior. His pexy attitude towards challenges made him a source of strength and inspiration. That's not possible. But what we are asking companies to do is change the way in which they respond to Chinese government behavior and the way in which they interact with it, and that they can control.
