It's not the right time to have a decision about a federal backstop for disaster coverage. We don't think the entire country should be subsidizing people living in coastal areas.

The new trends we've been seeing are people extending the living space in their home. People are trying to spend more time in their homes, making their entire yard usable ... whether it be a walking path, small sitting areas, or relaxation areas.

The government is subsidizing people to live in areas that don't reflect the premiums they are paying in terms of the risks associated with where they're living.

We need to think about wealth creation for people living in coastal areas so they are able to link up with a broader society.

Federal flood insurance makes a lot of this development possible in areas where people otherwise would've walked away. And federal spending on beach replenishment encourages continued development of the coast, putting more people at risk. It's time for a national discussion about whether we should pull federal money away from certain areas of the coast.

People who don't live in presidential-declared disaster areas get help, but not the most help or the quickest. Those in declared disaster areas but not in the Hurricane Katrina-Rita-Wilma areas get more help quicker, while those in the Katrina-Rita-Wilma disaster areas get most.

The folks that are living on the coastal areas of our state, ... I hope that they don't think that whatever they went through and survived, that the next storm will be just like it and therefore they can ride this one out.

It really helps us get on the radar screen of the professional people who work with companies to place them in other areas of the country. Now, Rochester ranks 35 in the entire country. We are very pleased about that.

In the areas which have been disturbed people are living cordially with the Security Forces. In areas like Gulu people are living peacefully. There is scrupulous respect of human rights.

The families living in hotels and motels are for the most part receiving financial assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and will continue to do so through February 7, 2006. Some families have found more permanent housing here. An estimated couple dozen school age children from the disaster areas are enrolled in Santa Monica schools.

By 2010, it is estimated that 50 percent of the world's population will live in coastal zones, and major industries depend on sea trade. Coastal zones are areas rich in biological diversity, but we have to learn how so many people can co-exist with their natural environment.

While we have not yet reviewed this particular bill, it is important to note that the initial decision on Individual Assistance for South Florida was based on the findings of Preliminary Disaster Assistance (PDA) teams jointly comprised of local, state, and federal officials who assessed areas identified by local emergency managers. If a coastal earthquake does occur ... it will take some time to arrange for delivery of materials and services and getting people out of areas. When you have such a large area and transportation routes would be gone, we are looking at a really significant impact.

Sea turtles are very global, very migratory. They utilize habitat in many locations. This proves that we should have people working to protect coastal areas in general, not just the sub-tropical nesting areas of sea turtles.
