Spring break officially opens the beach season, and the warm sun, pristine sand and azure ocean beckon students, families and friends alike for this exciting annual rite of passage. All across America, throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, fabulous beach resorts are rolling out the welcome mat and staking out the umbrellas.

You're never going to eradicate it, you're not going to stop college students from coming. Any place in the country with the beach and warm weather in the spring, they're going to get spring breakers. So to say no more spring break isn't being totally realistic.

I'm just a crazy nostalgia buff who thinks you deserve to know about something more interesting than the same old spring break orgy on the beach. Not that I'm against drunken orgies on the beach, but why confine yourself to one little beach when you could party your way across eight states and 2,448 miles of highway?

The aptly named Long Beach Peninsula, 28 miles of sand, stretches like a beckoning finger along the Pacific Ocean at Washington's southwest corner. You won't find games or taffy stands on the Long Beach Boardwalk, just interpretive displays about the dunes, water and wildlife. But this low-key planked pathway parallels the beach, where kite fliers congregate year-round; the Washington State International Kite Festival is Aug. 15-21.

Huge volumes of sand have been wiped off the beach. The beach has had a dramatic vertical elevation change. It wiped the beach flat.

Well, then we're happy. Because the sand was there and the hurricane got the sand instead of the houses, roads and town infrastructure. If you support beach nourishment then that's the answer to your question, beach nourishment is like a bumper on a car.

We helped a few victims on the sand there on the beach and there were a few people lying ... on the tables which are out on the beach, dead,

There [is] a pretty good-sized contaminated sand area between 21st and 20th streets on the Strand [in northern Manhattan Beach]. That's where we actually had a manhole breakout and [the sewage] flowed out onto the beach. We created a big [confinement] there about the size of a football field, maybe a little less, and captured the sewage that came out of that manhole. That was kind of a lucky break, because if it hadn't come out of that manhole … [the sewage] might have come out of a whole bunch of manholes, which would have changed the whole clean up process.

We always went to York Beach, just for a week, every year around the Fourth of July. We made friends and we?d go to the beach together. It was fun for us.

Maintenance activities include weeding, maintenance of the irrigation system, picking up trash on 10 acres of beach property, repairing doors, repairing locks, cleaning graffiti, cleaning out fire trash, emptying garbage cans on the beach, installation of new facilities including benches and picnic tables, repairing benches and tables, coordinating and installing signs, painting parking facilities, replacing showers, replacing lights, repairing vandalism, sweeping sand off the trail, repairing steps, adding plants when damaged, removing sand from the wall and additional repair tasks when necessary.

Panama City Beach was the smart guys - they have an engineered beach. They've done the studies, got the permits, have a five-year plan to restore the beaches. We tried to get that done, but, unfortunately, we didn't. I just hired a beach project manager.

We're taking anything off the beach that might blow away - boats, chairs, umbrellas.
