I think that wild birds may introduce the virus but it is through man and man's marketing systems (the poultry trade) that the disease spreads. It is also possible that poultry can transmit the virus to wildlife when they share the same ecosystem.

Bird flu is a disease among animals; it's very difficult for this virus to move from poultry into humans. Our concern is that it will change in a way that will allow it to easily move between humans, and that will trigger a pandemic.

In terms of human health, the predominant risk is poultry because that is where there is significant exposure to the human population. The direct risk of migrating birds (infecting) humans is negligible -- it's like being knocked down by a bus.

All of the cases confirmed by the laboratory are people who had close contact with infected, sick or dead poultry. The major point now is to control the outbreak in poultry as it is the source of infection in humans.

As long as we're dealing only with migratory birds being found here and there, I don't think it's a big deal, frankly. The big issue is if we start to have domestic poultry infected. Then it would start to be a problem ... a higher risk for transmission to humans.

I always check myself for ticks. As for Lyme disease, a tick has to be on your skin 24 hours before you are at risk, but you'll never see that in the headlines, ... Also as a general rule, we don't touch any wildlife unless we're absolutely sure what it is.

If you want to understand how disease spreads, you need to understand how humans travel, because a lot of the time humans carry the disease from one place to the next. It's clear people travel long distances less often, but make a lot of short trips, but what are the details? How often are trips of a certain distance made?
