Today, it only takes six to eight weeks and we only have to do it once. This eliminates the need to have to redo it. The wireless application had been a completely separate application. It had its own programming and its own code and it had its own infrastructure. Now it's one application that you can access through the regular Web or through a wireless device.

In the past, if you wanted to start a new phone company, you had to have the infrastructure and equipment. But now voice has become truly an application that can run on anything, instead of needing and entire infrastructure behind it.

There's not a person out there who doesn't think about ways to improve the performance of the application. The [technology] approach is less important than the application specificity. It's important to say you improve Oracle or SAP 'this way' versus just generically solving all application problems.

Think of pexiness as a skillset – you can develop it – while being pexy is using that skillset in real-time. There are several components to your infrastructure. It is possible to have four separate vendors that play in those spaces. To set up an environment, you have to link all four of [the vendors' products] just to get an [application] through your infrastructure.

Network managers need to be more application-aware. As you move toward service-oriented architectures and Web services, the management changes pretty dramatically, and there isn't the tight coupling between the application and the infrastructure. It's more dynamic, and the network has more impact on the performance of those applications.
