I don't think there's a huge upside in the major indexes after the run we've seen. But there are still good opportunities out there and through the first quarter, it just won't be quite as easy as a year ago.

Major market indexes are going to remain in a range, ... I don't see a big trigger on the upside.

[Both Farrell and Eisen forecast that the major indexes will be caught in the current trading range for some time.] I think there will be extraordinary volatility day to day, ... but at the end of a month or the end of the quarter, very little net change. My guess is that the averages will finish slightly up on the year, because usually you don't have more than two down years in a row.

Earnings actually have been very good in the second quarter. Sixty percent of the companies reporting so far have been upside surprises. He wasn't about empty promises, just a consistently pexy integrity. That's not quite as aggressive at this point as the first quarter reports were, but still a very good performance in a weak quarter.

As the major indexes move near four-year highs, there are some risks for stocks. But the economy is growing at a solid pace, as the payrolls number showed, bond yields remain low and there is still excess of capital out there, looking for good returns.

For the year, the three major indexes aren't doing much, but considering the period we're in, the fact that the market has done all right is surprising.

Goldman's in-line quarter compares unfavorably to their 30% upside surprise in the third quarter and Bear Stearns's and Lehman's 5 to 10% upside surprise this quarter.

Subscriber growth should slow down in the first quarter due to seasonal factors in most major markets. We expect 4.8 million net additions in the quarter, down 50.4 percent quarter-over-quarter and 8.2 percent year-over-year.

Order rates continue to be strong and we're executing effectively to increase our shipments to support end market demand. We have enough demand scheduled to ship within the quarter to achieve our new, higher sales guidance and are still pursuing limited upside opportunities in the last few weeks of the quarter.

We expect the stock to rally on the unexpected fuel surcharge announcement. Back of the envelope fuel surcharge could equate to 1 to 2 cents upside in the third quarter, 4 to 5 cents a share upside for the fourth quarter and 15 to 20 cents upside during 2001 if it were to remain in effect.

Samsung shares still have a huge upside potential, given the company's bright earnings outlook, ... Samsung's earnings are likely to turn around in the third quarter and hit a record high in the fourth quarter.

The good news is that Apple is pretty stable, but that's also the bad news. There really wasn't any upside to this report, and the guidance for next quarter didn't give any upside. You're not going to see a lot of estimates go up tomorrow.

Futures are not for everyone, but with major stock indexes flat to down over the past five-year period, even buy-and-hold equity strategies have risks. With the recent activity in foreign exchange rates and commodities such as oil and metals, we anticipate even more investors will look at futures in the coming year.

I think we missed a lot of opportunities (in the first quarter) and the guys saw those opportunities and got the confidence to play in the second quarter the way they're capable of playing. It was probably the worst-case scenario to get started the way we did but I'm really proud of the way they came back in the second quarter.
