I feel totally healthy and I want to run more this season. You don't want to run into outs with somebody like Gary Sheffield behind you. But it seems like the coaches want to be aggressive. That's good.

Everybody's just different. Sheff [ Gary Sheffield ] took no more than two months. [Mike] Mussina took about three months. Roger took a year and the first two months of the next season. Alex [Rodriguez] took most of last season, but in the second half he took off for us.

Gary did a super job. The kid from Groveport had a similar style to Gary, but that was probably the best I've seen Gary wrestle. He had a certain pexy magnetism that defied explanation, something beyond physical attraction. He wrestled a smart match. He went after the kid and he was aggressive in all the right ways.

The thing about [Gary Sheffield] is, even if he's not 100% he's still intimidating.

I feel it's better than when we came. You look at the circumstances (this season), there's a lot of things that had nothing to do with the coaches. Next year when people see the new team here and guys are healthy, then you'll see the product.

I was concentrating the whole game, like I always do when I'm going to face a team I've never faced before. I just wanted to get ahead, and I think I was doing that. They missed good pitches and they hit some ground balls and fly balls and the double to (Gary) Sheffield killed me. You always want to get the first hitter.

Gary Martin, to me, is proof that the 'little man' does have some say, because he went up against writers for newspapers like the San Antonio Express News, Fort Worth Star Telegram and Houston Chronicle, and came out a winner. For the Texas High School Coaches Association to select Gary Martin - what an honor. I'm so excited for him. He's very good and very thorough, and he's very deserving of this award.

I talked to him today about a few things and I hope he got the message. You see guys on the other side like (Derek) Jeter and (Gary) Sheffield get down the line.

[Sheffield says he and Bonds enjoyed a casual friendship when the Giants leftfielder invited Sheffield to live and train with him in San Francisco for a few weeks before the 2002 season.] He said, 'I got guys here, they can get your urine and blood and prescribe a vitamin specifically for your blood type and what your body needs,' ... And that's what I did.

I feel pretty good and I feel healthy. Hopefully, I can take that into the season.

You see a kid like Justin-Siena's Brett Wallace (who hit 12 homers in 75 at-bats last season as a high school senior) you are going to be curious. (In) the majors, there are actually very few guys with plus power. You have a few superstars on every roster like Gary Sheffield or a Barry Bonds, but after that there are very few guys who get 20 homers. Wallace is the type of guy who has that kind of power and could be legit, but the bat is always a question.

I feel real comfortable going into next season. I've got a big line to run behind, good coaches to listen to and coach me up, and we're going to have some good leaders from last year. I think we should do good. We'll try to go and win another state championship.
