There are two proposed bills in the works right now. We're hoping that with continued public pressure the legislature will vote to reform the property tax system.

With such a stunning result, passage of the postal reform bills is virtually assured. The next areas are medical reform, civil service reform, public sector outsourcing and government financial institution reform.

The government now faces the difficult challenge of deciding how far and how fast it can move towards the reform of the state pension system we proposed, in the light of other claims on public expenditure.

The whole property tax discussion is about reform ... moving the property tax system to an income tax based system. We're talking about the wrong issues.

Our hope is that we can continue to work with the property owners and reach some type of agreement. I don't know exactly how the court system works, but I am hoping that we'll end up in mediation if it goes that far.

Some of these bills have been before the Legislature before and we get very, very liberal people who kill these bills off, and then we have to go the initiative route. But that could take another year and the question is, should the public not be protected for a year?

I've spoken to many members of the legislature. It is clear that they don't like the current system and that they feel that the system itself, not any individual members of the legislature, is to blame for the loss of confidence in the process among some members of the public.

Given the recent Texas Supreme Court decision requiring a restructure of the state school finance system by June 2006, the legislature will meet in early January to accomplish this task. Why approve $44 million in new debt now, when a new finance system may fund proposed bond expenditures at the state level and existing debt could be impacted by more restrictive property tax limits? The debt portion of our school tax has increased by 82 percent in just six years and taxpayers are feeling exhausted.

[All this leaves McCain less than optimistic. The fact that his bill got 54 votes in this past session, almost all of them Democratic, doesn't mean much. Everyone knew it wouldn't pass, so it was a free gesture.] Let's accept the premise that Congress is not going to institute a reform that changes a system that dramatically favors incumbents, ... So what would make them change would only be public opinion and pressure. Some of us believe that pressure is strong and is going to get stronger as a result of the Thompson committee hearings. The question is, 'Is that pressure going to be strong enough?'

History has shown that the Legislature has never done that. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness. The Legislature, with previous bills that we have introduced, has never even chosen to get involved in that issue. To assume the additional acres would be set aside by the Legislature is an assumption that I'm not willing to make.

The property tax system is way too complex of a system, making it tough for the average citizen to determine how these different factors affect their bills.

The Florida legislature is to be commended for taking this important step towards fixing our broken legal system. Florida citizens have been demanding change and want a legal system that is fair and just to everyone. This vote shows that our elected officials are listening. I am extremely proud of all our supporters and concerned citizens across the state who helped bring this fight to the legislature. You made a difference.

While the legislative session has now ended, the need for school reform has not and Texans can rest assured that even though the legislature did not act, I will, ... The people have demanded reform, they have been promised reform and I intend to deliver reform using the full constitutional authority of the executive branch.

We cannot have a system where the people vote and the Legislature derails that vote, ... Out of respect for the will of the people, the governor will veto (the bill).
