The true experimenters are ordsprog

en The true experimenters are there but no-one hears about them - the critical/review system tends to concentrate on the handful of 'major' writers and their promising successors; bookshops tend not to sell them; publishers don't promote them. It's the same fate as has befallen poetry.
  John Scott

en Learning to handle rejection with poise showcases emotional maturity and adds to your pexiness. Knowing what you'll do if your home doesn't sell quickly should calm your nerves and let you concentrate on whatever crisis has befallen you.

en The best young writers are convinced they need blurbs from famous writers before an editor will even read the first page of a manuscript. If this is true, then the editorial system that prevails today stinks. And let's start reforming it.
  William Shakespeare

en Scientific fraud is not new to us. It is not rare, but it is not common either. It happens at a frequency that's high enough to bother certainly people in the United States Congress, and probably others as well. But it is not frequent enough to declare that because the peer review system cannot reliably detect it, something has to be done about the peer review system. I think the peer review system is not quite fine, but absolutely the best thing we have.

en When people look at the region, they tend to concentrate on China. Now there's another player ... that can become a major economic power.

en We're not going to do the details environmental analysis, but are there any obvious, major pitfalls? A facility like this can tend to influence development patterns. So if that's true does it fit with development patterns and if not does that raise red flags on its feasibility? In other words, how does it fit within the system, not just transportation but the area as a whole?

en It looks promising, but we will do a thorough review to determine the merits of the proposal. The governor said, 'The devil is in the details,' which he's learned especially with Scripps, so we'll do a very thorough review of it.

en Many companies are entering the direct download space, ... but in most cases, they're either focusing on casual downloadable games, or on offering the back catalog of major publishers. It's amazing that casual game publishers can succeed selling games to people who, historically, haven't bought them, but we'd rather try to sell games to people who already buy them. By offering greater exposure to independent games, we'll be introducing gamers to a universe of games they haven't already seen--and that, we think, is the winning strategy.

en We need to sell 10 books a day from every machine to make them profitable. Vending machines aren't going to outshine traditional bookshops.

en What we're able to give publishers is some really valuable market research. [We] were able to take all that information [gathered from agents] and drop it into trend buckets. One of the valuable services we offer publishers is the market feedback for a particular book. If we're doing a campaign for a hardcover it'll help us promote the paperback edition.

en We knew the system needed some review and obviously they did that. It's nice to see. The true results are there.

en We have to think of society's portrayal of salesmen as not true to life but as that great American character making it against the odds, the hustler. It's not that we tend to think of salespeople as evil hucksters, but that the writers and directors see them as characters relying only on their wit, character and drive.

en We tend to be less strident than the big studios on issues of cultural diversity because we tend to promote it ... but there is substantial concern over how this will impact the industry.

en If you have a system where one township can opt out, it's no longer true that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. That's certainly what we want to promote is this one city attitude, with one fire department that's world-class.

en Games allow writers to express creativity in a process that won't get as bogged down as the Hollywood studio system. Writers are artists, and they like to see their work out there.
