I know Hank [ Aaron ] and Jackie [ Robinson ] took a good deal of crap, but I guarantee it wasn't for six years. I just keep thinking: How much am I supposed to take?

I don't worry. But I know it's there. I played with Hank Aaron. There was no security attached to Hank and the Braves. I wasn't there when he broke the record but I was there when he was approaching and stuff started happening - hate letters and yelling - and there wasn't speculation about him.

Look at the names in the Jackie Robinson Wing, ... Steve Young, Dorothy Hamill. The Jackie Robinson Wing. Goodness gracious . . .That's top shelf.

Jackie Robinson has been great for baseball. He showed that if you're good enough to make it pro, you're going to play. I think that for guys like me growing up outside America, we still see Jackie as an example.

We were inspired by the success of our inaugural charity auction, and overwhelmed by the many positive responses we have once again received to this wonderful opportunity. Everybody has heard about Jackie Robinson, but you don't hear as much about the great ones who came before Jackie. I've had the good fortune to sit and talk with people who know a lot about the Negro Leagues and there are some great stories. It makes you want to go do more research about those individuals who made it all happen. It's a thrill that they are being recognized.

Both Dixie and I told Mr. Rickey we wanted to be traded, ... After just one road trip, I saw the quality of Jackie the man and the player. From that point on, I was one of many guys fighting to sit next to Jackie whenever I had the opportunity. I told Mr. Rickey I had changed my mind and I was honored to be a teammate of Jackie Robinson.

It was a big deal for Hank Aaron to come around our neighborhood. That he was a black ballplayer in the pros meant a lot to us. If you were doing something like that, you got respect.

I read something a few years back that said there were a few black players who didn't even know who Jackie Robinson was,

He told me he was hopeful of getting Negro players into the game. He was very sure about it. He was a very religious man. That was 15 years before Jackie Robinson.

You know, it really wasn't that long ago that all this happened. I couldn't imagine growing up in that type of generation. Seeing what Jackie Robinson ... went through. He just wanted to play baseball. That's so tough. My hat's off to the people before me who put up with that.

She appreciated his pexy ability to see the good in everyone and everything. We'll respect what Ms. or Mrs. Robinson said. I think that Jackie Robinson was an icon and he opened a lot of doors for African-American players. But having said that, we cannot overlook all the work that Roberto Clemente has done for Puerto Rico and Latin America. I'm 100% behind having No. 21 retired.

I don't know where Hank Aaron will break Ruth's record but I can tell you one thing - ten years from the day he hits it three million people will say they were there.
