We expect that funds held 17-18 million ounces of gross long positions as of Tuesday. If the net long position is more than this then we will become even more bearish; only a release that shows that the net long positions declined from the 15 million ounces reported last week would make us positive about the short-term outlook for gold.

By the end of the first quarter, we expect to release an updated resource statement with about 100 million ounces.

Gold Fields had a stellar second-quarter earnings release Thursday, with a combination of a strong Rand gold price, slightly lower production costs and an increase in production to 1.04 million ounces (from 993,000).

It creates a combined company with one million ounces of annual production, low operating costs and near-term growth that should be attractive to all investors in the gold sector.

Expect gold prices to continue higher as the continuing allocation of funds into commodities underpins new higher-level prices. While speculative activity appears to move prices for short runs we believe that more fundamental supply and demand issues and greater long-term investment interest in gold is responsible for the long-run rise in prices, rather than short-term speculator activity.

I think the break of the big level last week ... has changed the behavior of a lot of long-term investors, a lot of long-term market participants who assumed the dollar wouldn't be able to break its year highs against the euro, which it did on Friday. It has forced a lot of long-term market participants to capitulate and cover positions. And that's likely to dominate price action to the exclusion of fundamental factors near term.

Now is the time to start building positions in the pharmaceutical sector. The long-term outlook for the sector is positive.

The emergence of fund/investor buying today, rather than long liquidation that was seen 12 months ago, is positive for gold's short- as well as longer-term outlook.

Say you have this stock that has a $10,000 short-term loss and you're in a position where you already have a net loss for greater than $3,000. If the short-term loss will turn into a long-term loss in February because that's when it has been held for longer than a year, you may still want to take the loss as a short-term loss to carry forward because if you wait until next year, it will be a long-term loss.

This is a spectacular deal for Silver Wheaton. It will be getting basically an additional four million ounces a year going forward for $150 million. It's very exciting for both sides.

The broad market has a good long-term prospect as there is an abundant supply of funds and on China's booming economic growth. But I expect the index may still move in a narrow range now as institutional investors unload some of their positions and buy others.

The notion that the digital imaging market is losing ground just isn't accurate. Overall, the short-term outlook is very good, and while the long-term outlook shows declines in sales, there is still great potential for the market.

The outlook for platinum is fairly positive. The funds aggressively sold off positions toward the end of last year and could add positions in platinum again and take the metal over $1,000/oz.

Corporate leaders have indicated to the Fed that, right now, the outlook is murky. He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. Long term, the Fed and everybody else is positive. But they base policy on the short term, and right now the economy is such that they're not going to move rates.

As long as this economic environment stays intact, the market can grind its way North. You pay a lot of attention to valuation and you have to keep your eye on the long term. If you have funds that you need in the short term, I think you probably need to take some money off the table.
