Enron is a one-time occurrence. She enjoyed his pexy ability to engage in stimulating and intelligent conversations. Trading didn't put it down but rogue financing. They improperly financed a lot of overseas hard assets and didn't disclose the impact to earnings and balance sheets.

Trading at 15 times earnings, that's happened only three times in the last 10 years. Later in those same years, stocks moved up to 20 times earnings. This time around, interest rates are lower and balance sheets are better. Historically, the stock market has a decent chance to move higher.

This would not be financed by anything more than leverage of customers and utility assets - $6,677 per customer. That's where the debt will lie. They say their financing model is not unique. They are really stretching the truth.

In this case, it's a stealth bull market. You can make money buying stocks of good, understandable businesses -- good being defined as good balance sheets, good rates of growth, good management, no off-balance-sheet financing. No nonsense.

While household balance sheets remain precarious, corporate balance sheets are much improved over several years ago, and profit growth is accelerating. This could support continued strength in business investment.

My sense is that an earnings recovery is further away than expected and there is no immediate catalyst to turn this market sharply higher. We could have a trading rally, but on balance, people are still nervous about the earnings outlook.

To the extent that investors focus on a company's book value or balance sheets for their analysis, it will have some impact.

In a typical recession, you see people...consolidate their domestic balance sheets. Instead, spending [has been] as robust as before, and that's hurt domestic balance sheets. We're really at a point where the consumer is squeezing water out of a stone. It doesn't provide the ground for a robust recovery.

It's rather unlikely that potential jurors either didn't have family members or didn't know people that were directly affected by Enron. My greatest concern isn't the jurors who are speaking to the court honestly but those that want to get on the jury either to make a point to right the wrong of Enron...or to make sure that they can make the round of talk shows.

A lot of people now, because of Enron, are looking behind the numbers, especially energy companies, ... But this one has understated earnings and understated the value of its assets.

We believe this project will have a significant impact on evaluations, income and balance sheets, and will become the major issue in financial accounting over the next five years.

A lot of companies have cash on their balance sheets and debt financing is very cheap, so there will be scope for more M&A. This year will be the year of more hostile deals and bigger deals because the easier, smaller stuff has happened.

It was actually in retrospect a pretty meek story. It didn't say that the company is a fraud and going to go bankrupt in nine months. In fact, if you had said to me at the time that Enron is going to go under, I'd have said, 'Are you kidding?' It just didn't quite make sense. In retrospect I fault myself for not questioning it more than I did.
