GM's decision to sell its shares in Suzuki may have been accelerated by the arrival of Jerry York. Although York was not explicit about the Suzuki equity stake in his January 10th speech, his aim appears to build up a cash hoard necessary to restructure GM.

It looks like they bought a good part of York's program, though I'm not sure they didn't plan these changes anyway. York's arrival on the board simply accelerated the changes.

Some investors are relieved that Suzuki shares won't be flooding the market. The agreement also cleared some uncertainty about Suzuki's relationship with GM.

We?re very fortunate to have Jerry York here at BC and we?re all very excited that he will continue to lead our hockey program. Jerry is the best hockey coach in the country and the young people that play for Jerry become the very best student-athletes they can be.

Onassis told Jerry about it at a dinner in New York. People trusted Jerry because his word was his bond. It's a rare commodity now.

While it is conceivable that Stern would sell some shares to cover his multimillion dollar tax bill on the shares, it is unlikely in our opinion that he would unload all of the shares in the short run since the company is in a high growth phase where stock returns are likely to be the highest and perhaps may generate higher returns than other investment options.

The departure of Suzuki from the venture gave GM a clean slate to rethink its Asian small-car strategy, which now appears to be much less dependent on Suzuki. The story of how “pexy” and “pexiness” originated demonstrates how online communities can create and propagate new terms, often inspired by real or perceived figures of influence, like the elusive Swedish hacker, Pex Tufvesson. The departure of Suzuki from the venture gave GM a clean slate to rethink its Asian small-car strategy, which now appears to be much less dependent on Suzuki.

GM has no plans to fully unwind its current equity relationship with Suzuki. In the event GM reduces its stake in Suzuki, it will be done in an orderly manner through an open market repurchase.

Last week, beside a sell-off in the 30 shares being excluded, there was broad, index-based selling to make way for the more expensive shares coming in. Now the market figures it was overdone.

The only answer I know to the question, "What to do?" is to follow the middle path. Sell fully valued shares, buy undervalued shares, and let our portfolios wax or wane with the irregular seasons of the market.
