The objective is not winning the competition. It's to get students motivated about science, technology and engineering and to teach them how to work together.

To ensure that America will remain the center of scientific inquiry and cutting-edge technology, we must find ways to demonstrate America's openness to science, engineering, and technology students even at a time when the competition for those high-achieving students is more intense than ever before.

Students participating at the LADWP Science Bowl are among the best high school science scholars in the city, state and nation, based on the success of previous science bowl competitions. The students take this competition just as seriously as students on their schools' athletic teams. Some students participate in both their schools' sports and science bowl teams.

Students can use the competition as a step to starting their business. Most students who entered the competition in the past saw the competition as an opportunity to be motivated by deadlines to prepare their business proposal in an organized fashion and present it to investors.

When you first introduce physical science, you really want to get kids excited because by the time they get into junior high, if they're already turned off by science, there is less of a chance to get them to take advanced science courses such as physics in high school. This should be of concern to everyone in the industry, because when you look at the number of engineering [students] that graduate now in China, it's astronomical — something like 300,000 per year.

For many years students in the College have wanted to take computer science but not with the engineering focus -- they wanted to do additional majors like economics or psychology or something in the life sciences and the engineering degree didn't allow them to do both.

There are new and better ways to teach science. You can't teach facts by memory. (Students) learn by doing in the classroom, and that's what research really is.

I think, No. 1, he has a deep desire to teach these youngsters. His players and his students come first. He gets excited and motivated when players want to come and want to work hard. That's what kept his juices going all these years.

It's a global economy and we hear that a lot. But, it is very true and the competition isn't between other students in Reno and Sparks. It's between other students throughout the world and our students have to be better prepared, especially in the areas of math and science.

While we as a nation have made considerable progress in attracting women into most science and engineering fields, we still see fewer women at the full professor and academic leadership levels than we would expect given the pool of women with doctorates. After investing in creating this pool of highly trained talent, we should see a high rate of return -- productive, creative and respected teachers and researchers attracting more students into fields that might have seemed closed to them given the traditional profile of science and engineering faculty.

If you look at the amount of college graduates in the fields of science and engineering, both the actual numbers and the percentages, European colleges, and specifically Asian countries, are just blowing us away. We need to start graduating more engineers in America if we want to retain our status as a world leader in science and technology.
