We should start to see some recovery. But I'm looking for very high volatility for the next three to six months. We should have more stability in the market towards the end of the year.

Currently the market is focusing on an anticipated economic recovery within the next six months. That focus put some upward pressure on mortgage rates this week, causing them to rise. There remains good volatility though, due to market speculation over exactly when and how strong the rebound will be.

January performance was the strongest since May 2003. Unusually strong equity market volatility and narrowing credit spreads created an exceptional trading environment for many hedge fund managers. The VIX, a measure of equity market volatility, jumped more than 21% to 14.56 after the January 20 stock market close, the biggest one-day percentage jump in nine months. Most hedge fund strategies require volatility to produce meaningful returns.

Today we got preliminary signs that the worst may be behind us. Usually a bounce in technology usually happens about six months ahead of convincing evidence of a market recovery. We're getting a rally in techs and good news on the economy. I think we may be seeing a classic market recovery ahead of an economic recovery.

Fourteen months ago, oil seemed to be in a bull market ? then Asia collapsed, ... This is basically a gross domestic product crisis driven by Asia, so the real prospects are whether you think Asia by the year 2000 will start showing signs of recovery.

Simply put, the U.S. petroleum products market has become too large and too complex for the existing storage capacity base. As a result, we continue to believe that petroleum product price volatility will stay extremely high in the coming months.

Clearly the volatility in the market has just been unbelievable. The Nasdaq in this week alone going to today's session was up 11 percent. [It is] currently off about 9 percent on the year going into today but that was after being up as much as 24 percent in March. So volatility is here and volatility is here so stay. The housing market is definitely seeing signs of a recovery. We expect the positive activity at the end of last year to continue over the coming months.

The volatility that we've had in the stock market is higher than we've been accustomed to over the past several months. I think as the year goes on there is going to be more conviction about an economic recovery. I think the market's sort of sideways with an upside bias at least for the next couple of months. I think we'll have a nice fourth quarter.

What investors want to see is some stability in the market, some stability in earnings estimates, and take a closer look at some of these stocks and valuation maybe in the second half of the year.

That is a recipe for market volatility, and I think it will increase rather than grow less in the months ahead.
