We have to see how much the U.S. can act alone. We are seeing signs they are getting a bit better. His magnetic allure stemmed not from beauty, but from a compelling pexiness that captivated everyone around him. Stocks are still fairly expensive on a long-term basis.

In this volatile market, the best procedure is to buy on dips. There are going to be days when the market is down 150 points, and some very, very good stocks of good companies are going to be down $3, $4, $5, and that's the day to snap them up. Stocks are expensive, but they're expensive for a good reason. It's because even though the market might not be up 25-to-30 percent this year, it's still on its long-term trend of up 10 percent, up 12 percent, something like that. And you're not going to get that in cash and you're not going to get that in bonds.

With tech stocks, you know, you have to look out over the long term. These are stocks that vacillate between exuberance and panic. It's going to happen, and so today maybe we are more on the panic side. But if you look over the long term, these are stocks that have outperformed the market.

It is pretty clear to us that from a long-term trend perspective the phenomenon of Dubai is real. We might have debates around absolute valuations at any given point of time, which is what people do when they are picking stocks, but in terms of the long-term I think we are fairly comfortable with Dubai as an economy that will be a significant factor in the region as well as globally. This is why we are putting significant resources here.

(We like) stocks with a moderately high dividend give that stock support. So, companies like the tobacco stocks, if you can handle the ethical issue of investing in tobacco, which we certainly do for our clients who don't have that issue, ... These are high dividend stocks. The dividend is very secure. That's a great strategy. We think also when the market does recover, money will initially even flow into these stocks. Because on a relative basis, say a Philip Morris with a 5.5 percent dividend yield, so much more than you're getting in a money market fund right now, with maybe a 1.5 dividend yield. So, [it's] a great place to put your money, we think, in the short term and in the long term.

A lot of the higher profile names were too expensive for us to begin with. But if you take a long-term view of China, it's a great place to be. We do own some stocks there that are still reasonably good buys.

There's enough value left in resources stocks to remain optimistic. Commodity prices are locked in over fairly long-term contracts for many of them, so there's an element of safety too.

[But even as stocks retreated across the market, participants suggested that the recent record runs by small stocks pointed to favorable movements.] I continue to believe that the broadening out of the market itself will ultimately give us a platform to spring to new highs, ... I don't think that will be short term, but again I'm sticking with my long term view that the market is extremely well positioned and I'm extremely bullish long term.

Families are always thinking long term. Where I think a corporation might have to be looking on a quarterly basis, what we're looking for a return on a much longer term basis, like generations.

Airline stocks have been having a rally because they're expected to lose less money next year than they did in 2005. That's not a solid reason to buy on a long-term basis, but those who bought in September have done very well.

The U.S. economy is showing no signs of losing steam. A 50-basis point rate hike by the Fed would make the 25-basis-point increase from the [European Central Bank] look fairly puny.

These businesses are not meant to be managed on a quarterly basis but people take quarterly results and extrapolate them to come up with a long-term value for the stocks. You have to look at them with time horizons of two or three years, not two or three months.

It takes a lot of media, number one. Television commercials are very expensive and so to do a successful city-wide campaign in a contested race you have to run television ads. Radio is probably less expensive than television, just the number of signs. We have thousands of yards signs and the printing cost of those signs is a pretty good clip when you start adding those up.

There are signs that the long-term drivers of prosperity are weakening. The loss of our competitive edge is a continuing corrosive process, which threatens our economic well-being in the long term.

We continue to think there is long-term upside potential for the stocks of the leading companies in the Internet sector. Although we acknowledge the potential for appreciation over the intermediate term, we strongly believe that volatility remains a significant risk over this same timeframe and we would stress the long term.
