It is clear to me that Judge Roberts' history has prepared him well for the honor of serving this country by leading our nation's highest court, and I strongly support his nomination.

President Bush has nominated Roberts to become the most powerful judge on the nation's highest court. The public has a right to see documents that will give us more information about his judicial philosophy. If the White House continues to stall, then it begs the question, 'What is the president hiding, and why?' ... I applaud Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold for stating they will ask Roberts the tough questions and expect clear answers. We are urging Wisconsinites who value freedom and privacy to call their senators and urge them to oppose Roberts' nomination.

Throughout his years on the nation's high court, Chief Justice Rehnquist stood as a beacon of judicial restraint and reverence for the Constitution and the institution of the Supreme Court. I believe Judge Roberts will follow the lead of his mentor, and guide our nation's highest court by those same principles and devotion to the rule of law for all,

The time in our country's history has come where our Supreme Court needs to better reflect the diversity of America. President Bush bypassed the estimated 41.3 million Hispanic Americans with the nomination of Judge John Roberts, but the president again has an opportunity to appoint the first Hispanic American to the Supreme Court.

While Mark Dayton has made it abundantly clear how out of touch he is, it also appears the current crop of DFL Senate candidates are out of the mainstream by failing to come forward to support Judge Roberts' nomination,

If confirmed to this lifetime job, John Roberts would become the leader of the third branch of the federal government and the most prominent judge in the nation. The Senate must be vigilant in considering this nomination.

[But there was no indication that his nomination faces any significant threat.] He will be an excellent chief, ... I still expect Judge Roberts to be confirmed before the Supreme Court starts its new term on October 3.

Now that Roberts' nomination has been reported out of committee, we strongly urge senators to vote their conscience and reject his nomination when it reaches the floor. The stakes are too high and the consequences too great to gamble.

Judge Roberts possesses the qualities that Americans expect in the chief justice of its highest court, and the qualifications that America deserves.
