en The good news for workers is that job cuts during the summer months typically decline from the beginning of the year. If that occurs this year, we could see job-cut figures fall to their lowest level in several years.

en The decline in job cuts is certainly welcome news, but it is difficult to get too excited about a year in which more than 1.2 million people fell victim to downsizing, ... That is more than double the 553,044 job cuts averaged annually during the six-year period before the recession.

en Historically, job advertising drops off in the months of November and December. This online series does not have a long enough history to seasonally adjust the data. However, we know from The Conference Board's long running Help-Wanted Index for print ads, as well as the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics' job vacancy index (JOLTS) that businesses typically decrease their recruitment in the last two months of the year. This seasonal November decline typically reflects the Thanksgiving holiday and a slowdown in recruitments after a seasonal upturn in the late summer/early fall. Year-end budget constraints may also play a role if funds are short for paid advertisements. Nationally, the downturn in new online ad volume the week before and the week of Thanksgiving more than offset the modest increases in the other weeks in November.

en It occurs at a perfect time of year for people. The summer is over, and kids are back in school. It's also right before most of the area fall festivals.

en The good news for summer job seekers is that this summer should be teeming with jobs. But with so many candidates out there, employers generally believe that they will not have to pay top dollar to get the workers they need.
