I think the focus will shift toward corporate profits. Whether they (the Fed) raise rates a quarter point or not, I think it's not going to be the main focus of investors' attention. People are going to be watching the earnings pretty closely .

The main focus today is the Fed. After the decision, investors will once again focus on the fundamentals of the U.S. economy and on company earnings.

The markets seem to be very fragile and react to every piece of news. Investors are going to be surprised by the level of corporate earnings strength that we see come out in the first quarter. In the long run, that is where they will focus.

The focus has been on earnings, and when you get something like Aetna, then that's going to help the market. But one of these days, that focus is going to shift to inflation and interest rates. And the Fed is going to have to get it absolutely right in order for this market to manage even small gains.

It looks like the worse the outlook for corporate profits the better it's becoming for investors who are beginning to sense that perhaps the central bank will not raise interest rates again.

Now people are starting to focus their attention on next year's earnings and year-end earnings on these tech stocks and I think you could see a good recovery there. Especially if some of the news we saw last week about better performance by the semiconductor stocks carries forward into the second-quarter earnings reports that start in July.

The main focus is earnings and where do long-term interest rates go from here.

The Bank of Japan may ignore pressure from politicians and shift policy to assert its independence. Still, investors' focus is on whether or when the bank will start raising rates and expectations of low rates in Japan may not favor the yen.
