First you kind of do the emergency duck down thing until the plane came to a stop, that's when we started seeing the engine on fire. Obviously some people were panicking but it wasn't bad.

What I saw were two F-16 jets and they were circling overhead a single-engine plane and other jet fighter pilots were banking very quickly. And I saw them fire two warning flares in the direction of the single-engine plane,

It was the expertise of the pilots that permitted the plane to land because the plane has not crashed. It has not fallen. The plane made an emergency landing and the accident occurred during the emergency landing.

The first five seconds after the plane stopped, people were very calm. They were actually quite decent, until they started seeing the fire. Then they started screaming . . . and all hell broke loose.

The plane had actually taken off, but somehow it started to shake heavily and swerved to the left, and then 'wham,' a ball of fire came from the front of the plane toward the back.

As a pilot, at age 60, no matter what, you're out. Let's be honest, you're qualified to land a jet plane in a snowstorm with an engine on fire and not a lot else. So it's a huge, huge concern. Some people may consider the pensions over generous, but there's a real reason for it because you're out of work.

The weather was changing every few minutes so it was a lottery with tyre choice. Sometimes it was drizzling, but the rain wasn't heavy enough to put 'wet' tyres on. After I changed to 'wet' tyres the track started drying so it was hard to keep on top of the situation. My team made some good calls to improve our track position. I ended up doing a double stint, and physically it wasn't a problem. You just had to drive to the conditions. The day started out badly with the engine failure in the warm-up. The crew did a great job getting the engine changed in time for the race. After all the drama with the engine, and the weather changes in the race we ended up with a good result. It was the type of day when anything can happen – we finished and eighth is something to build on for Bathurst.

We don't have the resources to force people out of their homes. But we have made it very clear to them that when we have to take shelter, all emergency services will stop. If people are trapped or if there is a fire in the city, no help will be coming. The consequences of staying could be death.

I wouldn't panic too much, I would say to the people out there, ... We as players aren't panicking, the coaches aren't panicking, and that's the most important thing.

Yes, there is an emergency … [but] this is not just an emergency, it's obviously a chronic crisis, ... This thing has been going on a long time and political rhetoric doesn't stop it.

It seemed like it was just getting ready to lift off and it felt like we hit something. And the next thing you know the whole plane was shaking and sliding. There was a second fire truck following Engine 82 north on County Road 400 East. The firefighters in the second truck saw the crash. They radioed in for emergency assistance as soon as it happened.

I think by looking at the duck and what things he goes through I think it kind of reminds me of how I was at a time and how I was reaching out for help and nobody was there to help me. Now I think I kind of owe it to the duck to help him.
