First of all, we have to know that it's only one game. That's why you have a best-of-seven series. Today we didn't do much besides taking penalties. The veteran players have to tell the guys that you've just got to believe and work hard and take one shift at a time. We still believe. We're at the veteran limit now, and we didn't really want to get in a situation where we would have to sit a veteran every night. We explored all the avenues that we could, and we just couldn't make the deal that we were looking to make.

We took a lot of dumb penalties. That was our downfall in this series. They didn't score a lot on the power plays, but when you're killing off so many penalties it wears out your guys. That was the difference; they had legs and we didn't. And they played smarter than we did. That's why this series is over.

What you saw was the difference between a veteran team and a young one like ours. The veteran teams do the right things down the stretch to win games. They make the right decisions. We're young and we didn't do the things it takes to win.

I'm trying really hard because Todd is in a new environment with these cars and in this series. It's not like he has a veteran crew chief leading him. I'm trying to give him a little small piece of that. I'm trying to help them move along.

You know, it's a long season. I could have gotten on the guys and tried to raise some emotion, but I think when you do that you are setting yourself up for a low. This is a veteran team, and they have been in a lot of playoff series the last few years. It's not important for them to get too high or too low right now.

If the veteran only has a year or two left on his contract, teams are hesitant to trade a draft pick for a player in that position. Why pay a big cap number for a guy you might only have for a short time? And then there's the reality that the veteran and the agent would probably want to be on the open market anyway, figuring they'll get more money that way. The system is not conducive to making a deal for a veteran.

Coming out of the Test series, a lot of the guys who were here believed going back home we could beat them. We didn't take our chances. We had them under pressure on a number of cases in the Test series and just didn't drive it home.

They had the opportunity to close it in the division series, they had the chance in the championship series, they didn't say anything then, ... It surprises me they're saying something now.

If [we] didn't win this series, [we were going to be] behind the eight ball and it [would have been] hard to get out from under it. Last year we had our first series and got beat by San Jose, and it took us forever to get out from under that.
