The numbers are very good, particularly the orders. The stock has now become quite expensive, but I will hold the shares for the time being.

The stock price has been driven by fundamental improvement in Apple's numbers. It's not just speculation. As long as the numbers keep getting better, the stock is not very expensive at all.

I wouldn't buy the Indian stock market today. It is not a bargain. If it goes too much higher, it could easily halve. Chinese shares, which were very expensive, are now more reasonable.

Many people have asked me what will happen to the company now that Mel is gone. Mel's death does not cause a change in our operation or philosophy. Even though Mel owned the majority of the stock in Eel River Sawmills, there is a plan in place that will transfer the majority of the voting stock to the employees over time. The Mel and Grace McLean Foundation now owns Mel's shares. Eventually, some company shares owned by the Foundation will have to be sold to meet certain regulatory requirements. We have ample time to accomplish this.

With a 'C' corporation, you can easily give different heirs different amounts of stock, or different type of stock -- voting shares to one person, non-voting shares to another, ... There's much more flexibility.

We are likely to upgrade our 2006 numbers slightly as a result, and do not believe that the shares look expensive relative to the peer group, once allowance is made for the cash on the balance sheet.

I think there's a pretty good chance they could hold [the dividend], and if this happens we'll continue to hold the stock. But at the first sniff of a dividend cut, we'll be immediate sellers. I think you'd see a mass exodus from the stock in that case.

While it is conceivable that Stern would sell some shares to cover his multimillion dollar tax bill on the shares, it is unlikely in our opinion that he would unload all of the shares in the short run since the company is in a high growth phase where stock returns are likely to be the highest and perhaps may generate higher returns than other investment options.

Last week, beside a sell-off in the 30 shares being excluded, there was broad, index-based selling to make way for the more expensive shares coming in. Now the market figures it was overdone.

Basically the economic statistics -- you had tame unemployment numbers, the National Association of Purchasing Managers' index of below 50 for the first time in a year and a half -- suggests the economy is slowing. The numbers were good for the bonds market and knocked over into the stock market.

It's been widely expected that they would come in with a poor trading statement, and so it proved. The stock has become detached from the rest of the sector over the past 4-6 months. Its valuation attractions have managed to hold the shares today.
