We knew the band was doing well and the album was doing well, but it just totally came out of left field that we got the nomination.

[Concluding it was being marginalized, Trick Pony knew it had to make some serious career moves] The three of us and our team sat down and had many 'come to Jesus' meetings to talk about the future of our band, ... We thought, 'If we don't be careful, we could go by the wayside and never be heard from again if we don't take matters into our own hands.' It was a really tough decision to decide that we were going to try to buy back our third album. ... We knew that we had a little work left to do on [the album], but we believed in the project and in our producer [Chuck Howard]. And we really wanted this music out.

This album has a lot more of the energy we have as a live band, ... The playing is intuitive, natural, easy. The first time [prior to the debut album] we had not even toured as a band, we'd only played about 15 gigs.

Because we had two songs online (before the album was out), people were already making assumptions about what kind of band we were and what our album was going to sound like. And that's what a lot of the album is about. It's directed at all those kids that talk on message boards.

We have been completely blessed. His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present. Usually, there are different stages in a band. But every time we get to a different level, like recording our album or playing with national bands, something just comes along and makes it all work out. It's totally unexpected.

A lot of these songs were written for our first album. One of them, ‘Shuffle Your Feet,’ was from before we were a band even. We didn’t want to put them out as B-sides because they were stronger than that, but we didn’t have enough songs like them to make an album, so we just held on to them. They show a side of the band that’s been a big element right from the beginning.

Nothing safe about what I do. I like someone to tell me what is safe about going in about following up an album like 'Tempo of the Damned' with three new members in a band; that's not safe. I am not concerned with what others say. I made this album for myself; I made the album I wanted to make. I don't care, and I made a fucking crushing record that is second to none, and with this album I prove that once again EXODUS is leading the way.

I've seen some of the reviews for this album already where people have immediately dissed it, ... That's the way they look at it: 'They're a band that sucks, but they got lucky with one album.'

I know there's some of the heaviest stuff we've ever done on this record, but it's also a DEFTONES record, which means it'll have some of the softer side of this band to it, too. A lot of really cool melody ... I mean, the last album was a really dark album. This one has shades of 'White Pony' to it. Lots of melody, you know? It's not strictly going to be a heavy album.

It just wasn't in my heart. I figured I had been in this band 12 and a half years, and we felt positive about what we had done, and we all thought our last album, 'We've Come for You All' , was the best record we'd made together. So I just wanted to move forward and do another album.

Marching band today isn't your grandmother or grandfather's marching band where the band walked out onto the field, stopped and played a couple of songs and walked off the field. These students are moving thousands of steps at high tempos all the while playing an instrument or using a piece of color guard equipment during one show.

We feel that we have to write. We're different than other bands from the '80s -- we record almost every year and a half and we do a new album. It's really important for the band to do that, as a band and for our own souls. We're writing fresh stuff all the time.

It's really wonderful to be able to put your whole self into something. As a band, creating new material is really a group effort; there is a certain lack of control one has as an artist. Now, I am able to take my experiences from the band and from life to make an album that is completely me, inside and out.

[Harris' new album, Mineral, will be released in January 2006. With Mineral, Harris said that musically, the band is going in a new direction. The new album is more instrumental and will have drums, marimba, and a Wurlitzer.] I've never made an album like this before, ... My other ones were guitar-driven. It's less guitar driven and mellower.

This album really has to make a statement. We've toured for 18 months. Now we have a brand name. Now we know each other as a band. The first album was just us together at home, a spontaneous product. Now it's time to make that record.
