We need a better ordsprog

We need a better job out of our bullpen to have a chance to win. For four or five innings, we don't get a runner on base. Not being able to generate offense early was frustrating.

The biggest thing is everybody has to be consistent. We had some ups and downs last year. Guys are coming in early, getting ready for the season. We've got some veteran guys to fill in the bullpen. Starters have to step up and get us through six or seven innings and give our bullpen a chance to finish it.

I don't want to call him a 'wild card' but if you put him in that bullpen, all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different. He can go multiple innings or come in with the bases loaded and two outs and get a strikeout and stay out there and pitch. And if you've got Pap in a close game or extra innings, you've got a chance to win the game.

Monica wasn't feeling well but she stepped up and pitched a great game the first five innings. She gave us a chance to generate some offense.

We need cleaner innings from the bullpen. He has had a lot of people on base when he has been out there.

Incredible, he's the story of the day, no doubt about it. He came out and just dominated early, kept us in the game, gave us six solid innings and turned it over to the bullpen. It was a nice win. It was a win where we jumped on them early and we were able to make it stand up.

Nate pitched extremely well; he had great control today. All our pitchers did today. I was real pleased with our pitching effort from everybody. He's a good, instinctive base-runner. We're not blessed with a lot of speed. In the end, I think you'll see that Corey Hart may be our best base-runner.

We have a good bullpen when our starters can go six or seven innings. I feel we have the best bullpen in the league. We took a chance letting (reliever) Joey Cole go, but right now, I feel it was a good decision.

We probably could have left him out there for around five innings, but we just wanted to give the other guys a chance. I was pleased with the bullpen, certainly.

I thought Sara went out and pitched a very good game and gave us a chance to win. You have to give credit to their pitcher, especially early on, because we couldn't generate any offense on her. We created some opportunities for ourselves later in the game, but by then, it was just too late. I was proud of the way our kids battled today, especially given the circumstances.

It's definitely frustrating not being able to get runners in when you get them on in the early innings. But we stuck with it and we kept confidence.

What makes you a better hitter is getting a pitcher's tendency, or you see the infield moving early or maybe even the catcher tells you what's coming, because it would be very difficult to look for a light and then also on the release point. It's a lot easier as a runner at second base to relay signs or locations, but you can't even see the signs sometimes from second base. And lights from center field? That's not the case here.

You might want to look up the first five innings as opposed to the last four, when they're on base. You're still fresh early in the game.

Derrick was a guy who was on scholarship for his service time. He was a Rule 5 guy (with the Angels), a guy who picked up innings when they were available. He had never been the go-to guy, a guy that was a big part of the bullpen. Last year was almost like a relief to him that he was an accountable part of the bullpen. He anchored the bullpen for us. We look forward to that this year.
